Manchester City continue to chase Liverpool with the hope of catching the Reds and repeating as Premier League champions. The Citizens have only themselves to blame for their deficit after a disastrous December, but they are back to their old ways in the new year. City have been thumping opponents once more, and they will be out to pick up another three points on the road against Newcastle United this Tuesday. They are heavy favorites to get the win.

Odds Analysis

Newcastle got the win they needed last weekend against Cardiff City. The Magpies were moderate favorites against a Cardiff City team many thought was the weakest in the league at the start of the year, and they took care of business in a 3-0 smackdown of the Bluebirds. Fabian Schar netted a brace and Ayoze Perez put Cardiff away with an injury time goal to move Newcastle out of the relegation zone. The Magpies can’t rest though. They are just two points ahead of Cardiff in their bid to survive.

The Citizens have flipped a switch. After the poor run of form that put them seven points back of Liverpool, they are dismantling foes once again. They have destroyed minnows Rotherham and Burton in cup play, and they beat Southampton, Wolverhampton, and Huddersfield Town by multiple goals. Their only close game was a win over Liverpool that pulled them to within four points of the league leaders.

Key Injuries

The injury situation is becoming dire for Newcastle. Ki Sung-Yeung came back from the Asian Cup with an injury and he will be sidelined for another few weeks. Yoshinori Muto is still on Asian Cup duty, while there are question marks across the board. Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett are doubtful because of thigh injuries, while Karl Darlow and Mohamed Diame are questionable to play. The good news is that Federico Fernandez and Kenedy look set to return after being sidelined due to illness.

Claudio Bravo is a long-term injury on the side of Manchester City, and it seems as if Vincent Kompany has had a setback in his bid to return from an injury. Both players will be out for this one.

Player to Watch

Raheem Sterling has come a long way since his time at Liverpool. Sterling always had the skills to be a big success in the Premier League, and he is now putting it all together. He is tied with Sergio Aguero for the team lead in goals, and his seven assists are the second-most on the team. His pace has helped him outrace defenders up the flank or be on the receiving end of long passes from skillful midfielders, and he will stretch Newcastle’s defense here.

We are re-entering the insanity of spreads when it comes to Manchester City. The way in which they have been dispatching opponents is incredible, but there is reason to believe they will take their foot off the gas pedal a little early here. City are involved in two cup competitions still, and with the Champions League knockout rounds starting in two weeks, Pep Guardiola will want to save his squad for those tilts after getting up on Newcastle.

Although Newcastle is banged up with injuries, most of the Magpies best players are healthy, and that’s a positive sign here. I see them grabbing a goal in order to stay within a couple goals of City.
