EPL Betting Odds – Tottenham Hotspur at Burnley Match Preview

The third time was the charm for Burnley. After being immediately relegated during their first two returns to the top-flight of English football in 2010 and 2015, the Clarets have now spent four straight seasons in the Premier League. It hasn’t been easy to stay up, but Burnley has made it work, and this club will certainly survive at least another year. The Clarets are currently in ninth place in the Premier League table with 38 points, placing them just two points behind Saturday’s opponent, Tottenham Hotspur.

Odds Analysis

It’s been a dismal season for Tottenham. Spurs’ hopes were high heading into this campaign after a strong showing in the Premier League and a runner-up finish in the Champions League last year, but they are currently in seventh place in the standings with 40 points. Their chances of winning any silverware were spoiled with their loss in penalties to Norwich City in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and it doesn’t look likely that they will return to the Champions League next season.

Tottenham has lost four of its last eight matches in Premier League play. Spurs’ only great win so far in 2020 was against Manchester City, and their other two victories in league action came against newly promoted Norwich City and Aston Villa. They dropped their last two league matches to Chelsea and Wolverhampton, and a home loss to Red Bull Leipzig in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash likely spells doom in that competition.

The Clarets are on a six-match point streak. Burnley hasn’t lost a league match since falling to Chelsea 3-0 on January 11, winning four times and drawing twice in that stretch. They have done the improbably with victories over Leicester City and Manchester United in the span of four days, and this club also drew Arsenal. In that stretch, Burnley has allowed just two goals, playing sound defense.

Burnley is close to earning a spot in Europe, but the Clarets certainly don’t want to take part in the Europa League again. The long distances traveled and midweek play really takes its toll on smaller clubs, and we saw Burnley nearly relegated last season after qualifying for the Europa League the previous season.

Key Injuries

Jose Mourinho knew that the loss of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min would likely end this team’s Champions League hopes, and neither player might not play again the rest of the season. Both players are expected to miss another five weeks, and the manager wouldn’t want to rush his stars back and wish further injury for no real benefit.

Spurs will also be without Moussa Sissoko for another month, but Hugo Lloris could return to the pitch on Saturday. Juan Marcos Foyth has also been listed as questionable, and Ryan Sessegnon is probable.

It’s been three weeks since Matthew Lowton has seen the pitch for Burnley, and he remains sidelined due to a knee injury. Johann Berg Gudmundsson is still recovering from an injury too and will miss the match, while Ashley Barnes is listed as doubtful due to a groin issue.

Matchup to Watch

Back on December 7, Tottenham obliterated Burnley 5-0. Four of Spurs’ goals in that game came from three players that won’t take part in Saturday’s tilt though, giving the Clarets plenty of hope they can run their point streak to seven games. Dele Alli and Lucas Moura both look gassed playing without much rest, so don’t expect multiple goals from Spurs.

The draw is the right play here as Spurs’ offense just won’t find much success against Burnley.
