Dan Ige (17-6, 9-5 UFC)

Ige came into the UFC with a record of 8-1 and he has nine wins and five losses in the UFC. In his last six fights, he has three wins and three losses. He defeated Gavin Tucker by KO, Damon Jackson by KO, and Nate Landwehr by unanimous decision; while losing to Jung Chan-sung by unanimous decision, Josh Emmett by unanimous decision, and Movsar Evloev by unanimous decision. Ige has been a pro since 2014 and he has five wins by TKO/KO and five by submission. He has six first round finishes.

Ige said this to mmajunkie.usatoday.com about his upcoming fight against Mitchell, “Mitchell’s good at what he does when he gets on top – his top pressure. His wrestling game, I think, is really underrated. He doesn’t have really pretty wrestling, but he can fight from long, extended positions and find a way to get the takedown, get the body lock, and get the back. I think people underestimate his standup a little bit. His stand up’s real herky-jerky – weird timing, but he hurts guys. He hurt Edson Barboza on the feet, so it’s not one of those fights of, ‘Just don’t get taken down and you win.’ You’ve got to be cautious and mindful everywhere the fight goes.”

UFC Picks

Mitchell is coming off the first loss in his career, as he was beaten by Ilia Topuria. Mitchell considered retirement after that defeat, but he is back to take on Ige. If Mitchell is motivated there is no reason he won’t win this fight. Ige has won a couple of fights of late, but I don’t give him much credit for beating Damon Jackson and Nate Landewehr. Before those two wins, Ige had lost three in a row.

What we do know is that Mitchell will want to get this fight to the mat. Ige hasn’t been anything special in takedown defense, so if this fight does go to the mat, then Mitchell has the edge. I don’t see a clear path of victory for Ige unless Mitchell simply comes into this fight unmotivated and unprepared. If Mitchell has a gameplan then he should get this fight to the mat and find a way to submit Ige. Oftentimes I will look at the rounds option, but in this fight, I think the best choice is to simply lay the price and take Mitchell. If you want to bet a prop then taking Mitchell to win by submission is definitely worth considering, as you get +400 on that UFC prop.
