UFC Fight Night 145 Odds - Petyr Yan vs. John Dodson Betting Picks

UFC Fight Night 145 Odds

Bantamweight uber-prospect Petyr Yan (11-1, 5 KOs, 1 SUB) will meet former title challenger John Dodson (20-10, 9 KOs, 2 SUBs) at UFC Fight Night 145 (UFC on ESPN+ 3) on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. The card streams live on ESPN+ starting 2pm ET.

The Russian is coming. Petyr Yan, a fighter that many hardcore fans believe is a lock for title contention, will level up his competition this Saturday. After going 3-0 inside the octagon against the Teruto Ishiharas and Jin Soo Sons of the division, Yan will now meet a former title challenger in the Czech Republic.

Hoping to derail Yan’s hype is John Dodson, a respected fighter with a resume that includes fights against Demetrious Johnson, Marlon Moraes, Pedro Munhoz, TJ Dillashaw and Jimmie Rivera. Though there was once a period where he was considered one of the top flyweight/bantamweights in the world, Dodson has alternated wins and losses for eight fights, unable to find a consistent wins recently.

Now 34, Dodson finds himself as something of a gatekeeper, and that’s exactly what he’s doing here against a guy that many consider one of the best prospects in the UFC. We’ve got a matchup of experience vs. potential here, featuring two fighters who can do a lot of damage in a short period of time. This one should be a lot of fun, with some hyperactive moments.

Dodson has always been a guy that relies on his extraordinary athleticism. Somewhat of a pint-sized dynamo, his speed and explosiveness carried him to the top of two divisions, where many guys found it impossible to corral him and counter his lightning quick hands. Even at 5’3”, he earned a reputation as a power puncher after he notched countless knockdowns with a blitz that was impossible to see coming.

But at 34, he’s slightly past his prime and it shows. He still has yet to be stopped in 30 fights, but nearly half of his 10 losses have come within his current run. But don’t get it twisted: this is still a tough out, even for the top fighters in the weight class.

What makes Yan so special? He’s a flashy boxer who both rains hell and gets knockouts. So far in the UFC, he’s landed 7.07 significant strikes per minute, which is just a stupid number. In his debut, he became the first man to knock out the durable Teruto Ishihara - and needed just three and a half minutes to do so. Plus athleticism lets him keep fights standing, though he won’t have to worry much about the takedown against another striker in Dodson.

UFC Odds Pick: Dodson to win at +180

We like Dodson as a big underdog here. He actually does his best work as an explosive counterstriker, and we know that Yan will give him plenty of opportunities to slip and rip. While this is a dangerous bet considering Yan’s potential, Dodson’s experience and speed make this an extremely perilous style match for Yan.
