UFC 276: Adesanya vs. Cannonier Betting

Israel Adesanya (22-1, 11-1 UFC)

Adesanya came into the UFC with a record of 11-0 and he has 11 wins and one loss in the UFC. In his last six fights, he has five wins and one loss. He defeated Robert Whittaker by KO, Yoel Romero by unanimous decision, Paulo Costa by TKO, Marvin Vettori by unanimous decision, and Robert Whittaker by unanimous decision; while losing to Jan Blachowicz by unanimous decision. Adesanya has been a pro since 2012 and he has 15 wins by TKO/KO. He has seven first round finishes.

Adesanya said this to punching.com about his upcoming fight against Cannonier, “Jared is a fighter; I call him the dark horse of the division. He was in the heavyweight division, and then moved down to the light heavyweight division, and now he’s in the middleweight division – so he has a lot of power in his hands. Thanks to his skills, he dealt with many people, but many people are not me. Styles make fights, and I’m the Elementalist, so our duel won’t go all the way. He will be choked or knocked out.”

Jared Cannonier (15-5, 8-5 UFC)

Cannonier came into the UFC with a record of 7-0 and he has eight wins and five losses in the UFC. In his last six fights, he has five wins and one loss. He defeated David Branch by TKO, Anderson Silva by TKO, Jack Hermansson by TKO, Kelvin Gastelum by unanimous decision, and Derek Brunson by KO; while losing to Robert Whittaker by unanimous decision. Cannonier has been a pro since 2011 and he has 10 wins by TKO/KO and two by submission. He has seven first round finishes.

Cannonier said this to givemesport.com about his upcoming fight against Adesanya, “There’s going to be a lot of technique being employed. It’s going to be a very technical — it’s going to be a striker’s delight if you will. But it isn’t going to be no striking match. This is an MMA fight. So, I don’t plan on playing his striking game. He goads everybody into it. He confuses them, but then next thing you know, they’re in there getting juiced. They didn’t know they were playing right into his hands. I’m planning on neutralizing. I want him to be neutralized. On no level do I want to be flaccid out there. If he does something, he’s going to have to be super dynamic. He’s going to have to be very dynamic. He’s going to have to be like, red alert type. For me, this is going to be very fun, very interesting.”

UFC Picks

I think this fight is a mismatch, as Adesanya is a very good fighter who has lost just once in his career, while Cannonier is a good, but not great fighter. I don’t see any path of victory for Cannonier, but I don’t lay big prices, and 4-1 is too high for me. I do think the rounds are worth playing, and I agree with Adesanya, as I see him getting the finish. I’ll take the rounds to go under 4.5.
