Wyndham Championship Golf Matchups

With a number of the PGA Tour’s more high-profile players already secured a spot in the FedExCup playoffs that start next week, the field for the regular season finale Wyndham Championship is a bit watered down. However, the importance of a good finish isn’t lost on any of the competitors with a number of players looking to maintain their standing within the top 70 while others will be looking to squeeze into the playoff field. Established as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938, the tournament hasn’t had a repeat titlist since the 1950s. And that trend will continue with defending champ Tom Kim sidelined due to injury. Sungjae Im opened as the outright betting favorite after earning a T2 at last year’s edition. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of tournament matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

One thing to note is the race for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Several players are on the bubble while others look to solidify or improve their ranking. The number of players moving on was slashed from 125 to 70 leaving several players without the opportunity to play for the FedEx championship, though the golfers not advancing still have something to play for on a course that’s forgiving. Sedgefield Country Club is a short 7,131-yard, par-70 that plays straightforward and is one of the easiest par 70s on Tour. It’s not going to scare the field but there are some roadblocks. Water is present on a number of holes while doglegs and small, undulating greens will be a test. The biggest stat this week is accuracy. Stay clean off the tee while avoiding the water and chances of scoring low improve. Six of the previous seven winners scored 20-under or better.

Wyndham Championship Matchup Picks

Sungjae Im -110 vs. Hideki Matsuyama

The top two favorites in the outright market are paired against each other in a matchup with similar odds. You could easily flip a coin on which to player to back in this one, but I’ll dig a little deeper with Im getting the nod. Im is locked into a playoff position at No. 36 in the FedExCup standings, but there has to be a sense of urgency on his part after a MC at the 3M Open, his fifth in the last nine starts. His career at Sedgefield also stands out with four paydays and three top 10s, including a runner-up showing last year.

Akshay Bhatia +100 vs. Eric Cole

I’ll admit I was a little hesitant to back Bhatia but his overall body of work this season has been impressive with a breakthrough win at the Barracuda in his last start. That came on the heels of a T9 at the Barbasol showing that the young man can thrive in events with a similar field. He’s also no stranger to Sedgefield having played this tournament twice before, and he’s looking to better his results that saw him collect two MCs.

Webb Simpson +140 vs. JJ Spaun

I’m not sure a bet on Simpson is the best move, but sometimes you have to bet on a dog to strike it rich. Simpson has been non-existent this season, but he always finds a way to play this tournament in his backyard. And why wouldn’t he with the success he’s enjoyed. He withdrew from last year’s event but racked up top 7s in each of the previous five editions with a pair of runner-up showings. Overall he has 11 top 25s in 14 starts at Sedgefield with a win in 2011.

Harris English -105 vs. Beau Hossler

Unable to build off his T8 at the Masters, English has still enjoyed a marvelous stretch since April with four top 15s. He’s also had a good run in this tournament with his MC last year the first in eight appearances. He’s gone over par just four times in 30 rounds at Sedgefield boasting a career stroke average of 67.7. That may not be good enough to get a win but it’s more than okay for a win in this matchup.

J.T. Poston +120 vs. Denny McCarthy

Known as a streaky player throughout his career, Poston has been in a groove the last month sparking my interest in him at plus odds in this matchup. Over his last four starts he has a T2 at last week’s 3M Open to go along with a pair of T6s. That run came immediately following an eight start stretch that included three finishes outside the top 30 and five MCs. Here’s banking on the positive streak continuing.
