Wells Fargo Championship Golf Odds

After a year away the Wells Fargo Championship returns to a familiar venue for the 2023 edition with Max Homa looking to become the first ever repeat titlist while going for his third win in the last four playings. The tournament switched courses last year with long-time host Quail Hollow Golf Club getting prepped for the Presidents Cup. Homa won for the second time besting a trio of golfers by two swings at TPC Potomac for his sixth career PGA Tour title. Rory McIlroy tees it up for the first time since missing the cut at the Masters topping the board as the betting favorite. McIlroy has had plenty of success at Quail Hollow over the years winning the event in 2021. The tournament always attracts a strong field and with designated status this year a number of the game’s best are in attendance. Odds Analysis

Jason Day +2454

My outright picks look like a who’s who of golf royalty. That’s what happens when popular tournaments get designated status. Add strong recent form to tournament success and Day becomes a popular pick in the outright market. Seven top 20s in his last eight starts has Day feeling good about his game and he’s looking to erase the memory of that closing 80 at Augusta that sent him tumbling down the leaderboard. This could be the spot. In the event’s debut as par 71, Day was the only player carding four sub-70s. He also earned a top 10 at the PGA Championship held here in 2017.

Rickie Fowler +4050

Playing some of his best golf this season, Fowler has overcome what was bugging him during a funk that lasted far too long. The one thing eluding him, however, is a win with the drought reaching four years. He’s played the weekend in his last 10 stroke play events finishing among the top 10 three times among his seven top 20s. Fowler has also enjoyed plenty of success at Quail Hollow, including his maiden Tour victory in 2012.

Max Homa +3250

The course and the tournament have been special for Homa making it hard to ignore him. And at this price how can I? He’s the defending champ having won at TPC Potomac, but he also prevailed at Quail Hollow in 2019 for his first Tour victory. He was also pretty good at the Presidents Cup last year going 4-0-0 to help the Americans to victory. And that event was held at Quail Hollow.

Rory McIlroy +665

Needing a jump start after MCs in his last two stroke play starts, Quail Hollow could be the magic elixir. The only three-time winner of this tournament with all of them at Quail Hollow, along with nine top 10s in 10 appearances, McIlroy should be in the right frame of mind after not competing since the Masters. For those past performances he’s a huge favorite with little value, but it’s hard to not at least consider McIlroy in an event that’s been good to him.

Jordan Spieth +2053

Spieth was one player that stood out in the Presidents Cup going 5-0-0 to help the Americans prevail. That performance came after not navigating the course for several years, so we know Spieth can adapt. Improved distance off the tee has helped him to four top 5s in his last five stroke play starts and he’s been playing solid golf all season that started with his Presidents Cup run.

Course: Quail Hollow Club – 7,538 yards, Par 71

Back in the rotation after hosting the Presidents Cup last year, Quail Hollow will look remarkably similar to what the field remembers. Stretched out to over 7,500 yards, the track was difficult enough when it played at par 72, now it’s at par 71 after a redesign a few years ago. Distance is required off the tee in order to contend, so we can expect a lot of drivers. Players don’t have to be overly concerned when teeing it up with forgiving fairways and rough that’s not as long or thick as other venues. Making up plenty of distance on this layout are eight par 4s that are longer than 450 yards. There are hazards out there with water in play on a number of holes and greens guarded by bunkers on nearly every approach. It’s difficult making up ground over the final three holes. Known as the Green Mile, the par 4-3-4 finish has frustrated many golfers over the years.
