Wells Fargo Championship Golf Matchups

Following a thrilling weekend south of the border, Mexico Open champ Tony Finau along with several others makes the trip to North Carolina for the Wells Fargo Championship. The event returns to a familiar setting with Quail Hollow Golf Club back in the rotation after surrendering last year’s host chores to prep for the Presidents Cup. Max Homa posted his second WFC title and the sixth of his PGA Tour career winning by two swings at TPC Potomac. Homa’s first Tour win came here in 2019. In between those victories (the tournament was canceled in 2020) Rory McIlroy won his record third title. Playing for the first time since his MC at the Masters, McIlroy is listed as a big favorite in the outright market. Designated status means more of the top players are in attendance setting up some interesting matchup betting opportunities. Need to Know

Quail Hollow underwent a major redesign just a few years ago making it even more difficult. It was tough enough at par 72, but after the facelift many of the birdie opportunities were eliminated when par was reduced to 71. Jason Day emerged victorious in 2018, the first year at the revamped layout. It’s still a long ride stretched out to 7,538 yards so look for plenty of drivers with distance being a key. With generous fairways, accuracy off the tee isn’t as important here as it is on other layouts. Getting to the greens should be easy; knocking down those putts will put you in contention on Sunday. The closing stretch known as the Green Mile has frustrated plenty of golfers over the years with its ability to swallow golf balls. It’s tough to make up ground over those final three holes.

Wells Fargo Championship Matchup Picks

Max Homa +128 vs. Justin Thomas

A perfect record at last year’s Presidents Cup along with his 2019 triumph puts Homa in solid position as a course horse. And seeing his price in this matchup makes him an even more inviting pick. Even with back to back MCs it’s hard to get down on Homa since he was so good early in the season with a pair of wins among six top 10s over 10 consecutive starts. Homa moved into the upper echelon of pro golfers with his recent surge and he won’t be fazed.

Akshay Bhatia +100 vs. Aaron Rai

It’s been a whirlwind for Bhatia, who earned special temporary membership earlier in the year. He’s taken advantage of the opportunity and was on point last week finishing alone in fourth at the Mexico Open. He also has a solo second at the Puerto Rico Open and has played solidly with only three MCs in his 10 starts. There aren’t many value picks out there and backing Bhatia at even money is close to it.

Rickie Fowler -115 vs. Tyrrell Hatton

One of several former WFC winners pegging it up this week, Fowler has seemingly turned his game around after years of struggles. One thing that would validate his efforts is getting a victory, something that hasn’t happened in four years. His run of solid form continued with a T15-T10 stretch in his last two starts giving him nine top 20s in 13 starts this season. He’s also 8 for 9 at Quail Hollow with his first career title here in 2012.

Jason Day -115 vs. Sam Burns

The last of Day’s 12 PGA Tour wins took place right here in 2018 when he toppled the field by two swings. There have been some lean times since, but Day is playing some of his best golf in years with strong form allowing him to rack up five top 10s in his last eight starts. He’s also been good at Quail Hollow posting a victory in 2018 in the first tournament since the course redesign dropped par from 72 to 71. Three of his other four starts have yielded a top 25.

Xander Schauffele +117 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Schauffele was another Presidents Cup star going 3-1-0 at Quail Hollow last year. Though he’s yet to win on Tour this season his top 5 status in the OWGR shows you just how consistent he’s been putting him in a spot to win every time out.. The X-man has three top 5s among his five top 20s in his last five starts with a strong enough bag to be in contention this week.
