U.S. Open Golf Odds

It’s back to the West Coast with a full field of players assembling this week at Los Angeles Country Club for the 123rd U.S. Open, the season’s third major. It should be interesting to see how players from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf interact with this being the first event with both sides coming together since the historic merger announcement last week. Brooks Koepka did LIV a solid winning the PGA Championship last month and has won the U.S. Open twice previously. Still, Koepka is only fourth on the opening U.S. Open odds list behind favorite Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, who also happen to be the three top-ranked players in the world. It’s been three years since an American won the U.S. Open with Bryson DeChambeau’s victory at Winged Foot in 2020. A year later at Torrey Pines, Rahm became a major champion for the first time with Matt Fitzpatrick emerging victorious in Massachusetts in 2022. Odds Analysis

Rickie Fowler +5950

It’d be easy to take the safe route and back the favorites, but what fun is that? Fowler has been sharp all season with only two MCs in 17 starts and backing him in matchups has been profitable with six top 10s among his 12 top 25s. Now it’s time for him to take the next step and it almost feels inevitable following his T9 at the Memorial and T6 at the Schwab in his last two starts. You can’t complain about his form and being a California guy has the stars aligned.

Dustin Johnson +4750

LIV golfers, especially Koepka (more on him below) have done well in this season’s majors. And with another outstanding group assembling in LA it’s time for Johnson to make his presence felt. I’m backing DJ for the simple fact that he appears to be over a nagging injury that hindered his performance earlier in the year making him a non-factor in the first two majors. However, a LIV win in Tulsa last month is a good sign that he’s back, and the price is inviting.

Brooks Koepka +1175

Koepka is healthy and when he’s right he’s dangerous. He was dominant at Oak Hill winning the PGA Championship fending off Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler. He was also runner up at the Masters in April with only a stumble over the final 18 holes preventing him from donning the green jacket. He rises to the occasion on golf’s biggest stage and it helps to be in peak playing condition, which he obviously is.

Collin Morikawa +3050

I had to consider this pick long and hard since Morikawa recently withdrew from the Memorial with a back injury. Turns out, at least according to Morikawa’s camp, that he experienced back spasms and it wasn’t a serious issue. If that is indeed the case I have no problem backing the two-time major champ at this price. One of the best iron players on Tour, Morikawa was in the hunt in the last two U.S. Opens. He also went 4-0 at the 2017 Walker Cup, which took place at LACC.

Xander Schauffele +1585

Schauffele is probably getting tired of hearing everyone say he’s the best player never to win a major. There’s only one way to change that and I’ve been saying for some time that it’s going to happen sooner rather than later. Well, it’s getting late fast for the X-man, but this is the one major he’s enjoyed the most success. Last year’s T14 was noteworthy because it was his first finish outside the top 10 in six U.S. Open starts.

Course: Los Angeles Country Club – 7,421 yards, par 70

A first time host, LACC underwent an extensive renovation that took nearly five years to get ready for this moment. The club hosted USGA events in the past, including the 2017 Walker Cup. However, that was before the extensive makeover leaving many to wonder just how the course will play. Familiarity with the layout is difficult since only a few golfers have played the course since its upgrades. The fairways are unusually wide for a U.S. Open layout leaving some to believe the scores can be lower, which isn’t normal for a major championship. The more than 7,400 yard layout opens with a lengthy par 5 and has a unique mix of par 3 holes ranging from 80 yards to over 300 yards.
