U.S. Open Golf Matchups

Golf’s elite gather along the shores of the Pacific Ocean this week for the second U.S. Open of the elongated season. I guess golf fans can thank the global pandemic for something. After much of the previous campaign was wiped out by COVID, Tour officials reimagined the schedule adding a pair of major championships to the docket. The 2020 U.S. Open was the second event of the new season with Bryson DeChambeau terrorizing Winged Foot for a six-shot victory. The Tour heads to the other coast to take on another behemoth at Torrey Pines in San Diego with Jon Rahm opening as the betting favorite. While the feud between DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka festers, many want to know if Phil Mickelson can add the career Grand Slam to his resume. Lefty has a record six runner-up finishes in this event and is the most recent major champion after his stunning win at Kiawah Island last month. Betting options are aplenty when golf’s premier events take place with a number of tantalizing matchups available to wager on at BookMaker.eu.

Need to Know

Tour regulars are familiar with the majestic Torrey Pines layout since the venue hosts the Farmers Insurance Open. There is one difference, though. That event is split over both courses on the property where the U.S. Open is played solely on the more demanding South Course. A recent renovation added more length with the course tipping at over 7,800 yards from the farthest tees. That certainly gives big hitters an advantage, but thick rough stands in the way so it behooves players to not stray too far. The 2008 U.S. Open was played at Torrey Pines with Tiger Woods winning a memorable 18-hole playoff. Woods and Rocco Mediate completed 72 holes at 1-under par.

U.S. Open Matchup Picks

Jordan Spieth -113 vs. Brooks Koepka

Spieth hasn’t had a lot of success at Torrey Pines, but his game is in a much better place now. The issues here are what plagued him until snapping out of his funk; the course is punishing off the tee and Spieth hasn’t been the most accurate. However, he’s in a good place and I think Spieth will rise to the challenge with the confidence of racking up eight top-10s in his last 12 starts. And besides, Koepka is likely to be consumed with something else this week.

Will Zalatoris +100 vs. Daniel Berger

It was hard to pass on Zalatoris at even money in this matchup. The youngster has been phenomenal this season and played his best in big tournaments with a trio of top-10s in his three major starts, including a runner-up at The Masters finishing one-shot behind Hideki Matsuyama. Tack on a T6 at the 2020 U.S. Open and a T8 at last month’s PGA Championship and Zalatoris has seven top-10s among his 13 top-25s in 20 events played.

Garrick Higgo +113 vs. Erik Van Rooyen

I was singing the praises of Higgo on the European Tour even before he won twice on the Canary Islands Swing. That display only made him a bigger presence. So what did the South African do for an encore? He won the Palmetto Championship last week in his PGA Tour debut. He hits the ball a long way off the tee, which will benefit him at Torrey Pines, and he certainly won’t be swayed by the moment.

Rory McIlroy -112 vs. Bryson DeChambeau

While he hasn’t been Rory-like recently, McIlroy showed signs he’s still got it by winning the Wells Fargo Championship last month. Still, it’s his only top-10 in six starts and he has a couple of MCs in his pocket in that span. His success at Torrey Pines stands out, though, and that’s why I’m backing Mac in this matchup. He has a pair of top-5s among his three top-20s in three events that have been partially played on this layout.

Patrick Reed -155 vs. Scottie Scheffler

I’m not a big fan of Reed’s but you can’t ignore what he did in January winning the FIO by five swings. And he’s always a threat in majors posting a top-20 in his last four starts and collecting six top-20s in his last nine major championship starts. He hasn’t played since a solo fifth at the Memorial where he topped the field in par-3 scoring. I wasn’t going to back him because of the price, but Reed looks too good to avoid.
