Travelers Championship Golf Matchups

I guess the name of this week’s tournament is fitting. The PGA Tour hits the road again making the trek from one side of the country to the other for the annual Travelers Championship. Though it takes place just a few days after the U.S. Open, the field is notable for its big-name players. After a late meltdown at Torrey Pines, Bryson DeChambeau emerged as the betting favorite with Patrick Reed and defending champ Dustin Johnson close behind. In all, half of the OWGR top-10 is scheduled to peg it up at TPC River Highlands, where winning scores in the high teens are a common occurrence. A full field of 156 golfers also presents a number of wagering opportunities with some of the top players featured in tournament matchups. You can visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

TPC River Highlands is a tidy course that measures 6,841 yards and plays par 70. It’s hosted this event since 1984 and has undergone a few makeovers since then. A number of bunkers were removed in 2015 to make scoring easier at one of the shortest tracks on Tour. There are just two par-5s and both offer a chance for players to make up ground. Those holes typically play well under par. We’ve seen different styles succeed at River Highlands with big hitters like Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson having five titles between them. Overall the course isn’t difficult with low numbers popping up all over the place and that won’t change this week. In 2018 Watson erased a six-shot deficit shooting a final round 63. And the Tour’s only 58 was recorded on this track by Jim Furyk in 2016.

Travelers Championship Matchup Picks

Dustin Johnson -105 vs. Bryson DeChambeau

Not only is Johnson the defending champ he’s also working his way out of a recent funk that saw him fall from the No. 1 world ranking. He’s not all the way back but a pair of top-20s in his last two outings is a start. And DeChambeau was a disaster last week after creeping into contention continuing his mystifying play over the last few months. The top two favorites should be hovering around the top of the leaderboard, but I’ll take my chances with DJ on his course he obliterated last year.

Bubba Watson -140 vs. Justin Rose

Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t back Watson at his current price. Heck, I wouldn’t back many players with those odds. But this isn’t a normal situation for Bubba and River Highlands is a course he has destroyed with three career victories, including two in the last six years. Nobody has dominated a course the way Watson has at River Highlands with three titles, a runner-up and eight top-25s, and I’ll take the risk of backing him.

Rickie Fowler -115 vs. Adam Scott

Not playing the U.S. Open last week had to suck for Fowler, especially after his top two finishes of the season. And that should be inspiration for a guy who’s been struggling to find his game. Fowler showed signs of breaking out two starts ago with a top-10 at the PGA Championship and followed that with a T11 at the Memorial however it wasn’t enough to get him in the field at Torrey Pines. He’s teeing it up for the first time in a few years at the Travelers with hopes of not being left out of another major.

Harris English -110 vs. Charley Hoffman

English enters on a wave of good form and oftentimes gets overlooked in the betting markets since he hasn’t reached the level of other players. That’s the case in the outright market where he’s listed at 30/1. Recent pitfalls at this tournament might have something to do with that, but his podium finish last week and a run at the Palmetto Championship tells me his game is where it needs to be.

Kevin Streelman +100 vs. Brian Harman

He’s second in all-time earnings at this tournament and Streelman enters with four straight top-20s, including a T15 last week. He also has a win here with an epic performance in 2014. He closed with seven straight birdies to finish one up and was runner-up to DJ in last year’s edition. There’s plenty of value in this pick with Streelman at even-money.
