Need to Know

TPC River Highlands is a tidy course that measures 6,852 yards at par 70. It’s hosted this event since 1984 and has undergone a few makeovers since then. A number of bunkers were removed in 2015 to make scoring easier on one of the shortest tracks on Tour. There are just two par-5s and both offer a chance to make up ground. Those holes typically play well under par. We’ve seen different styles succeed on this layout with big hitters like Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson having five titles between them. Overall the course isn’t difficult with low numbers popping up all over the place and that’s unlikely to change. Schauffele was 19-under last year winning by two strokes matching Dustin Johnson in 2020 for the lowest to par score since Freddie Jacobsen was 20-under in 2011. The Tour’s only 58 was recorded on this track in 2016 by Jim Furyk.

Travelers Championship Matchup Picks

Rory McIlroy +152 vs. Scottie Scheffler

McIlroy just finished 2-shots better than Scheffler at the U.S. Open and he seems to have recovered from a funk just a few months ago. Needing another stellar effort to top the ever consistent Scheffler, McIlory has strung together four top 10s, including his solo second at LACC in four starts since the PGA Championship. He’s been good on this layout as well going 4 for 4 with each visit resulting in a top 20. I won’t get Rory at this price again so I’m jumping on him to make me a few bucks.

Gary Woodland +112 vs. Keegan Bradley

I still remember Woodland from his U.S. Open title at Pebble Beach. It’s hard to believe it’s been four years, but at least my memory is still good. Woodland hasn’t won since and boasts only two top 10s in 19 starts this season. The good thing is I’m not backing him for the outright rather to finish higher than his matchup opponent. Woodland has at least been consistent with 14 made cuts playing among the top 25 five times.

Rickie Fowler -119 vs. Wyndham Clark

Backing Fowler as often as I have may end up costing me. He was one of my picks for the outright last week and looked entering the final round. He eventually succumbed to his matchup partner this week finishing five shots off the pace after a closing 75. Fowler’s been solid all season with seven top 10s among his 13 top 25s in 18 events. I do expect him to recover while Clark’s motivation might be missing after his U.S. Open title.

Xander Schauffele -125 vs. Viktor Hovland

He’s yet to win this season but this is the time of year Schauffele turns it on. He has to be irked about another blown opportunity to claim his first major slipping to T10 with a 73-72 final two rounds. He’s motivated and past success at this joint should help him get over the frustration. Schauffele won here last year by 2-swings and has two additional top 20s in four career starts.

Adam Scott +106 vs. Shane Lowry

I guess it had to happen eventually but even Scott’s first MC in over year shouldn’t take away from what he’s accomplished. In fact it might be a good thing since he got a few extra days off to regroup ahead of this tournament. Prior to his MC at LACC Scott posted three top 10s in four starts and has been consistently among the top 30. His last start at Highlands Ranch in 2021 landed him among the top 15.
