Travelers Championship Golf Matchup Odds

The unpredictability of the PGA Tour has never been more evident than since the reboot a few weeks ago. We saw upset winners in Daniel Berger and Webb Simpson in the first two events while notables like Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm finished well off the pace or didn’t even make the cut. Things may settle down this week with another stacked field entered in the Travelers Championship. The top six ranked players and nine of the top 10 in the OWGR are set to tee it up at TPC River Highlands presenting a number of quality tournament matchups to wager on. McIlroy is listed at the top of the odds chart again like he has been in every one of his starts. The best players in the world make for intriguing matchups. Need to Know

TPC River Highlands is a tidy course that measures at 6,841 yards and plays par 70. It’s hosted this event since 1984 and has undergone a few makeovers. A number of bunkers were removed in 2015 to make scoring easier. There are just two par-5s and both offer a chance for players to make up ground. Those holes typically play well under par. We’ve seen different styles succeed at River Highlands. Unlike the previous two weeks where accuracy was a necessity, this track is more wide open giving big hitters a chance to show off. Bombers like Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson have five titles between them. Overall the course isn’t difficult with low numbers popping up all over the place. In 2018 Bubba Watson erased a six-shot deficit shooting a final round 63. The Tour’s only 58 was recorded on this track by Jim Furyk in 2016.

Travelers Championship Matchup Picks

Keegan Bradley -128 vs. Chez Reavie -103

These two battled to the end last year with Reavie pulling away for a 4-swing victory. They probably won’t be near the top of the individual leaderboard with a much stronger field, but this matchup does add some drama to the festivities. Bradley’s history at TPC River Highlands and last year’s failure are big reasons why I like him to win this matchup. Bradley is 9 for 9 here with last year’s runner-up among five top-30s in that span. He was solid at Colonial with four sub-70 rounds to finish T32.

Joaquin Niemann -116 vs. Gary Woodland -112

Niemann is on fire with his irons, something that will come in extremely handy this week. He used his sharp approach game to hang around the top of the leaderboard at the Schwab. He played the final 36 holes at 14-under and looked poised to win until a bogey on the penultimate hole left him with a share of fifth. Making his debut at TPC River Highlands last year, Niemann nailed down a T5. He enters this week with form and confidence.

Jordan Spieth +135 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick -169

A quick look at the odds for this matchup shows us how far Spieth has fallen from golf’s. Don’t go thinking he’ll never win another tournament, though. The grip change prior to the start of the season and the layoff didn’t help. He’s played well in spurts since the return – in the mix at the Schwab only to lose ground in the final round and torching Harbour Town with a 66 following a triple-bogey opener – but has yet to put everything together. Who can forget the hole-out bunker shot in a playoff to win the 2017 edition? It’s risky, but I’m backing Spieth at plus odds.

Bubba Watson +118 vs. Dustin Johnson -148

Both players took last week off after opening the post-COVID campaign with strong showings at Colonial. The difference between the two is their play at TPC River Highlands. Everything appears to be lined up for Bubba this week. His record here is phenomenal with two wins in the last five playings and three titles overall. There’s something about this place that brings out the best in Watson, and I’m buying him at this price.

Justin Rose -112 vs. Xander Schauffele -117

He hasn’t played in this event since 2013, but when Rose did show up he was consistently good. He collected five top-20s, including a solo third, a pair of T9s, and 13th in his last visit. Rose has flashed fine form since the restart with a T3 at the Schwab and T14 at the RBC Heritage.
