the Memorial Tournament Golf Odds

The PGA Tour heads to Jack’s Place in central Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament. As always another strong field is assembled with the top five players in the world rankings scheduled to peg it up at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Hosted by Jack Nicklaus the tournament is one of the longest running same venue events on Tour with this being the 48th edition. OWGR No. 1 Scottie Scheffler sat out last year’s playing but is back as the betting favorite after finishing a shot off the lead last week. The third favorite on the opening line is Patrick Cantlay, who aims to continue a trend that saw him emerge victorious in 2019 and 2021. With a win Cantlay can join elite company as just the third player to win this tournament three or more times. Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele make up the rest of the top five favorites. Odds Analysis

Patrick Cantlay +1000

Heading to a place that’s yielded him great results while on a run of terrific form have me looking at Cantlay for the outright. The price isn’t bad for a guy with five top 10s in seven starts at Muirfield Village, with two of those finishes taking him to the top step of the podium. He got a break two years ago with Rahm’s WD following a positive COVID test, but he was in position to take advantage. He also hasn’t finished worse than T21 in his last nine starts with four of those putting him in the top 5.

Jason Day +3300

I likely wouldn’t back day if it weren’t for the fact that he’s a member at Muirfield Village. That hasn’t meant much in the past with underwhelming results here, but Day has played well over the last few months ending a drought with a win at the Byron Nelson a few weeks ago. He also had a stretch earlier this year with seven straight top 20s before winning in Texas. I also expect a rebound effort after his MC at the PGA Championship.

Rickie Fowler +4000

I keep picking on Fowler with it being hard to ignore his recent run of form. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship following a string of eight top 20s in nine starts. That MC didn’t destroy his confidence with Fowler returning to earn a share of sixth at the Schwab last week. If feels like he’s getting close and I don’t want to miss the boat on this one. And we’re getting him before the market catches up, which is a nice payday for Fowler and me.

Scottie Scheffler +650

Playing good golf as consistently as Scheffler makes him a threat every week. I typically don’t back the favorite since I’m always looking for value picks. However, with nothing but top 12s since last November how can you not take a serious look at the guy? Included in those 14 starts are two wins and five other top 5s, including his last three starts with a T5 at the Byron Nelson, T2 at the PGA Championship and T3 at the Schwab. His results here improved in each of his last three starts with a solo third two years ago.

Sahith Theegala +5500

Theegala is the next first-time winner on Tour and this is a good place to start. He slipped a bit his last few starts still playing the weekend and his last visit here in 2022 resulted in a top 5. His game is consistent as a ball striker and second-shot artist, two traits that play well at Muirfield Village. He has seven top 10s this season with only one MC making him a strong play in alternate markets as well.

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club – 7,533 yards, Par 72

Opened in 1974, Muirfield Village has hosted the PGA Tour every year since 1976. Following the conclusion of the 2020 Memorial Tournament the course underwent a significant renovation with rebuilt bunkers lining fairways and protecting greens. A number of trees were also added, tee boxes reconfigured and close to 100 yards were added making the distance 7,533 yards. Another year of growth since the remodel should make the course more difficult. It’s still a straightforward track, though, with a number of generous fairways that are open to big hitters. Greenside bunkers serve as a line of defense and can cause problems with the save rate consistently below Tour average. Most golfers agree that Muirfield is a second-shot layout that yields favorable scores with excellent ball striking and proper positioning off the tee.
