Sony Open in Hawaii Golf Odds

The season opening swing through the Aloha State concludes this week when the PGA Tour makes the short jaunt to Oahu for the Sony Open in Hawaii, contested at the Waialae Country Club. The tournament also welcomes a full field after a limited number of players hit the links in Maui. Last week’s winner Chris Kirk will attempt to become the seventh player to sweep the Hawaii swing as he tees it up among the top favorites on the odds board. Kirk won by a stroke at Kapalua and placed third in this event last year. Defending champion Si Woo Kim is one of seven past winners of this event in the field. They all sit behind betting favorite Brian Harman in the outright market. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Odds Analysis

Brian Harman +1450

It isn’t often you get the favorite at such a price making it worthwhile to back him. It also shows us the field is fairly even. Harman chiseled off any rust he might have had by collecting a top 5 last week continuing where he left off at the end of last season. He closed the regular portion of the schedule with three top 5s among four top 10s in his last seven starts, including a win at The Open. He’s also quite familiar with Waialae having never missed a tournament and there are better results in store with his confidence overflowing.

Chris Kirk +2000

It doesn’t happen often that a player wins both tournaments in Hawai’i, but it has happened in the past and the way Kirk was dialed in last week he’s worth taking a look. And just like Harman, Kirk’s never missed a stop at Waialae with better results. He has five top 10s at the property that include a pair of runner-up finishes, a solo third and a T5. You have to think Kirk is feeling good after winning at Kapalua and heading to a venue that’s treated him well over the years.

Matt Kuchar +6000

Backing Kuchar might be a sentimental pick, but it comes with good reason. He had a decent fall getting geared up for the Tour season with a trio of top 20s across different Tours. And he’s another player with plenty of experience and success at Waialae. Dating back to a T5 in the 2011 edition, Kooch has been a consistent threat making the cut in eight of his last 10 starts here placing among the top 10 seven times, including a win in the 2019 version. You can’t be much more consistent on the course than Kuchar’s been and dropping a few bills at his price has value.

Sahith Theegala +2900

A stumble at the end of last season didn’t appear to cause Theegala too much stress. He rebounded nicely in the fall winning the Fortinet Championship and continued his strong play with a runner-up last week falling by a single swing to Kirk at Kapalua. He’s been consistent throughout his brief career and more wins are in store for the former Pepperdine Wave player, who hasn’t touched his ceiling yet.

Will Zalatoris +7500

It might be too early to back Zalatoris and the odds are reflective of that. He lost most of last season to a back injury that required surgery, but Zalatoris did get some work in last month at the Hero World Challenge when he had two rounds of 68-71. He also blew up a couple of rounds but it was more about the process and not the result. It’s been 10 months since he teed it up at a Tour event but I have to think if he’s playing he feels good. And when the Z-man feels good results follow.

Course: Waialae Country Club – 7,044 yards, par 70

The course has hosted this event since 1965 and at just over 7,000 yards is short by Tour standards. Those who played last week on Maui will have to do an abrupt change to their approach. The beast at Kapalua measured over 7,500 yards at par 73 and played to the big hitters. Now we have the narrow layout at Waialae with its tree-lined fairways. The track will force players to club down with importance on accuracy rather than distance. It’s a straightforward layout with few hazards, which is why we’ve seen some low scores in the past. Five years ago Justin Thomas won the prize with a record 27-under as one of six winners over the last nine years to score 20-under or better. Also, two of the last four events were won in a playoff with the other two ending in a 1-shot victory.
