Shriners Children’s Open Golf Matchups

The PGA Tour heads to the Nevada desert for a two-tournament swing in Las Vegas beginning this week with the Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin. Always a destination spot on Tour, this event features a number of Ryder Cup participants from both sides as well as a few big names teeing it up for the first time this season. Viktor Hovland emerged as the betting favorite as the only player with shorter than 20/1 odds on the betting board. It’s hard to predict a winner on a course that yields low scores. Defending champ Martin Laird and 2019 titlist Kevin Na each shot 23-under and won in a playoff. And you can expect some wacky times on the matchup board. Need to Know

TPC Summerlin plays 7,255 yards at par 71 and doesn’t offer much resistance. If the weather cooperates scores will plummet and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see -20 at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday. The previous three winners all carded 21-under or better with Na and Laird posting the lowest score since Webb Simpson’s -24 in 2013. The hard part is predicting which player has that score since the field is loaded. Some say course experience is a bigger factor than course form. But knowing how to play altitude and wind will easily make up a few strokes. The elevation shortens the track and also levels the playing field and we’re likely to see more irons with an emphasis put on placement over distance.

Shriners Children’s Open Matchup Picks

Louis Oosthuizen +110 vs. Webb Simpson

It’s hard to go against Simpson with his record at TPC Summerlin, but I still can’t get over what Oosthuizen accomplished last season and if anyone’s deserving of a victory the South African surely qualifies. There’s no guarantee Oosthuizen will be as good as he was when he posted four podium finishes in six major championships last season. And he was good in other events as well. I’m banking on the solid play carrying over and will happily bet at plus odds.

Will Zalatoris -115 vs. Scottie Scheffler

Zalatoris has done just about everything but win a tournament during his brief time on Tour. Getting permanent status hasn’t changed much in his game and he’s just one poor round away from higher finishes this season. He set a course record at CC of Jackson last week with a 61 showing his game is at a high level. He earned a share of 14th following a T11 in Napa getting the new season started on a positive note.

Patrick Reed -105 vs. Si Woo Kim

Reed pegs it up for the first time this season and returns to the Shriners for the first time since 2014 hoping to turn around his play from the end of last season. There’s no mistaking his talent with nine Tour titles to his credit, but his odds have slipped making him a perfect candidate in this matchup. He posted just one top-20 in his last seven starts, but we know what he’s capable of.

Matthew Wolff +111 vs. Maverick McNealy

Wolff has talked about being in a better place both mentally and physically and he showed that with last week’s T17 in the Sanderson Farms Championship. It’s just a start on his road back, but I believe in his talent and at plus odds in this matchup he’s a solid pick. Last year at this event he shot a 61 and succumbed in a playoff, so there is unfinished business on his checklist.

Henrik Norlander +108 vs. Sahith Theegala

I’ve backed Norlander in matchups before and the Swede paid off for me. And he has plenty of value with his current price. Norlander opened the season with a T4 in the Sanderson Farms closing the week with a 64. He finished last season making the cut in four of his last five starts with a top-5 in the Barbasol Championship. He’s been consistent throughout his career and I’m banking on that this week.
