Odds Analysis

Rory Sabbatini / Kevin Tway +1600

There hasn’t been a successful title defense since 2004 which is probably why this pair is further down the odds board. But if you’re looking for experience and camaraderie this team certainly has it. The two hooked up for the first time last year with similar odds and scored a -31 total to win the event. Sabbatini is playing his 11th shootout and finished as runner-up in both 2011 and 2012. Meanwhile, Tway looks to stay undefeated as he plays for the second time.

Harris English / Matt Kuchar +800

This duo reunites for the first time since 2017 looking to rekindle the magic that brought them victories in 2013 and 2016. The duo also has a pair of runner-up showings in 2014 and 2015. In all it’s the sixth time English and Kuchar have played together making them one of the most successful pairings in Shootout history. Individually they’ve each played well combining for 11 PGA Tour wins with English being one of the most consistent players on Tour over the last 12 months. The pair claimed the Shootout title by seven swings in 2013, the largest margin of victory in the event’s history.

Cameron Champ / Tony Finau +605

Put two of the longest hitters on Tour on a course that requires distant drives and see what happens. That’s what we have in this pair. Champ and Finau can blast the ball, which should be an advantage on the near 7,400-yard Tiburon layout. They each skipped last year’s edition and hope for more success as a team since this is the first time they are playing together. They each placed among the top-10 at the PGA Championship in August and qualified for the season-ending Tour Championship. Finau is coming off a T8 at the Mayakoba and Champ last teed it up at the Masters where he grabbed a top-10.

Sebastian Munoz / Joaquin Niemann +775

Why not add a little international flavor to the event. Munoz and Niemann are the first Latin American team in the Shootout and one of the youngest in the event. They haven’t enjoyed a lot of success individually on Tour this season with Niemann’s sixth at the CJ CUP the highest finish among the pair. They each secured their first PGA title in 2019 so winning is still fresh. Maybe they’ll have more success playing as a team.

Ryan Palmer / Harold Varner III +1400

Only three teams from last year are back with Palmer and Varner one of them. Both are making their third straight start in the Shootout and looking to improve on their T3 from their first joint venture. Palmer’s solid play in 2020 catapulted him up the world rankings to his current No. 29 in the OWGR. His last start produced a T4 at the ZOZO Championship.

Course: Tiburon Golf Club Gold Course – 7,382-yards, Par-72

As event host it only makes sense that the tournament is played on a Greg Norman-designed course, and the Tiburon Golf Club Gold Course has done just that since 2001. At just under 7,400 yards, the layout is a relatively long par 72, but by no means is it a difficult play for the pros. The course is lined by pine trees with a number of water hazards coming into play. It’s an aesthetically pleasing layout that can bite back in a big way with a number of bunkers lining fairways and greens. Distance off the tee is a key due to the course length, but accuracy is more important considering the number of hazards. The most important hole is the 17th. It’s a reachable par 5 and a team needing to pick up strokes has to do it here with a long par-4 waiting to close out the round.
