Presidents Cup Golf Odds - Bet on PGA Tour

Presidents Cup Golf Odds

The Presidents Cup hasn’t been much of a competition over the years with Team USA winning the last eight events while going 11-1-1 since the first playing in 1994. Led by PGA Tour player of the year Scottie Scheffler and with five players currently listed in the OWGR top-10, the United States is a huge favorite to continue their dominance. Several big name players are missing from the event due to their participation in the LIV Golf Series. Team USA is without Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, who were all part of the victorious 2019 squad. For the first time Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, NC will serve as host from Thursday through Sunday. The United States has won all seven Presidents Cups played on American soil. Format

A match play format similar to that of the Ryder Cup, though Team USA has excelled against the International team that consists of the best players NOT from Europe, since that is the Ryder Cup. Each team consists of 12 golfers with a captain, who is responsible for choosing the pairs for the doubles events. The first day of competition has five four-ball matches followed by five foursome matches on Day 2. The third day has four matches of each with final day of competition having 12 singles matches. A total of 30 points are available with the first team to 15.5 being declared the winner. A change prior to the 2019 edition required players to compete in just one match prior to the singles matches. In previous years the required number was two.

USA Team

A look at the United States roster and you’d think we’re teeing it up at the Masters. World No. 1 Scheffler along with Patrick Cantlay (4), Xander Schauffele (5), Justin Thomas (7) and Collin Morikawa (9) are all ranked among the top-10 and all 12 members of the team are among the top-25. You can see why Team USA is such a heavy favorite. That doesn’t always guarantee success, though. The second largest gap in terms of average OWGR came at the 1998 Presidents Cup with nearly 21 spots in favor of the Americans. Of course the International team went on to win that event 20.5-11.5 at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.

Rankings don’t mean a thing, but it sure gives us something to talk about, and how else are oddsmakers going to handicap the tournament. Six players – Sam Burns, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Morikawa, Scheffler and Cam Young – are making their Presidents Cup debuts. You don’t expect that to be an issue but if it is Davis Love III can turn to veteran Jordan Spieth, who’s making his fourth Presidents Cup appearance. He boasts an 8-5-1 record in the tournament. Thomas has also played in multiple events posting a 6-2-2 lifetime record.

International Team

Since the top European golfers are excluded from this event the International team has struggled. Skipper Trevor Immelman is hoping his roster of youth and inexperience in Presidents Cups can actually prove beneficial. Eight players are debuting, the most in the event’s history. LIV Golf affected the International Team more than the Americans with Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann deemed ineligible for their participation in the Saudi-backed league.

The roster isn’t void of talent, though. Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott are former Masters champions and guys like Sungjae Im, Corey Conners, K.H. Lee and Mito Pereira have enjoyed success on the PGA Tour. Everybody loves an underdog and the Internationals are a big one this week. In reality they have nothing to lose since they aren’t expected to win anyway, so using that as motivation could be the spark the group needs. In terms of outright talent, though, the US Team has a big edge that likely carries them to victory.

Course

Serving as host for the first time, Quail Hollow is no stranger to most in the field. The layout has been a constant on the PGA Tour hosting the Wells Fargo Championship, which Homa won in 2019. It’s a good test for the best golfers stretching to 7,571 yards at par 71. There are some big hitters among the rosters for a reason since length is a huge advantage. And we’ll see players go for it on the longest of holes since the course “will not be as penal when balls are hit offline.”
