PGA Tour Picks – Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchup Odds and Picks

Not bad for a first timer. Placed between the last two majors of the season, the Rocket Mortgage Classic has attracted a strong field for its maiden event as the PGA Tour returns to Michigan for the first time in 10 years. The field will convene this week at the Detroit Golf Club with Gary Woodland playing for the first time as a major champion. Fresh off his four-shot win last week, Chez Reavie looks to go back-to-back. World No. 2 Dustin Johnson is the betting favorite with a number of interesting matchups on the board at online sportsbooks. Odds are listed below.

Need to Know

Playing at 7,334 yards and par 72, the Detroit Golf Club is a relatively straightforward track, though it is a bit of a mystery since this is the first time in the Tour rotation. The property consists of two courses with 17 holes of the North Course being played along with one from the South Course. That allows organizers to get additional length. The course has a good balance of short and long holes to test the skills. There is an average amount of obstacles that consist of heavy rough, and bunkers along the fairway and guarding the greens. And speaking of the greens, they are small and undulating, which could pose problems if players aren’t honed in. By pro standards it’s an easy track and should yield low scores.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchup Picks

Hideki Matsuyama -110 vs. Rickie Fowler -110

Fowler probably wouldn’t be playing if not for sponsor obligations, which is just another reason to fade him. The others? How about poor showings in the last two major tournaments with his first MC of the season squeezed in between. That opens the door for Matsuyama, who enters with a string of four straight top-25s. He’s been lights out putting as well, which sits well at DGC.

Ryan Moore -120 vs. Patrick Reed +100

With strong showings on correlated courses, I’m leaning toward Moore in this matchup. His overall putting hasn’t been strong, but he prefers the poa annua surfaces, and any edge a player can get is helpful. Moore is third on Tour in driving accuracy and is coming off a solid T15 at last week’s Travelers Championship. He’s steadily improved over his last three starts and has a lot of confidence heading to Detroit.

Chez Reavie +120 vs. Gary Woodland -140

A head-to-head between the last two winners on Tour should at least be interesting. Woodland is playing for the first time since his U.S. Open victory and has been a stud over his past few starts. The win at Pebble Beach wasn’t a surprise. He also spiked to No. 12 in the OWGR. My issue, and the reason I’m taking Reavie in this matchup, is that Woodland hasn’t had much time to do anything but talk about his major. Reavie is coming off his own win and elected to ride the momentum a week after clearing the field by four shots at the Travelers.

Kevin Streelman -130 vs. Kevin Kisner +110

Another player entering on a run of hot form is Streelman. He scored below 70 in all four rounds last week settling for a T15 at the Travelers. In fact, he’s scored in the 60s in seven consecutive rounds that allowed him to claim solo fourth at the Memorial. Streelman has gained nearly five strokes on approach in his last five starts and he squeezed back inside the top 100 in the OWGR. I like his chances in this matchup.

Sungjae Im -110 vs. Joaquin Niemann -110

If there’s a matchup that could end in a push it’s this one. Niemann is coming off a T5 at the Travelers, matching his career-best finish and giving him a T31 or better in four straight starts. However, Im has been solid all year with six top-10s. This will be Im’s 28th start, which is a lot, but he has something left in the tank to overtake his matchup partner.
