PGA Tour Picks – Odds to Win U.S. Open

There is plenty on the line when the PGA Tour’s third major of the season takes over the California Coast this week for the 119th playing of the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links. There is the major championship, for one, along with a hefty payday for the winner. And the field is stacked with 156 of the top players in the world set to peg it up. Two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka goes for his fifth win in the last seven majors, and he’s not even the betting favorite. That distinction belongs to 2016 winner Dustin Johnson, who’s currently at +704 at BookMaker.eu. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods round out the top four favorites.

Odds Analysis

Brooks Koepka +745

We might as well just call him Major for the way he ups his game in the biggest tournaments. Only one player has ever won three straight U.S. Open titles, which is one drawback against Koepka, but winning four of the last six majors is a rare feat, so don’t count him out. He had a tune up at the Canadian Open last week as he typically does before majors and the strategy has paid off. He toppled the field last month at the PGA Championship and placed T2 at The Masters giving him a nice run in the first two major tournaments.

Tiger Woods +1285

Returning to the scene of one of the greatest performances ever, Woods looks to rekindle the magic at Pebble Beach. Back in 2000 he took a six-shot lead into the weekend and ended up winning by a whopping 15 swings. He also won the Pro-Am that year giving him the clean sweep at PB. Following his Masters victory, Woods didn’t play competitively before the PGA Championship. He changed his routine and posted a top-10 at the Memorial a few weeks back, so he should be geared for another run.

Phil Mickelson +4050

Recent form has stunk, but Mickelson said in February he loves the grass at Pebble Beach and he went on to win the Pro-Am at one of his best layouts. There is a little more riding on this tournament for Lefty as well. This might be his best chance at securing the career Grand Slam. He has finished outside the top-25 in six of his last seven U.S. Open starts. He was T4 in the 2010 Open here at Pebble Beach.

Henrik Stenson +7500

We have to look further down the odds board and Stenson is one player that stands out. He hasn’t done anything spectacular this year, but he remains one of the most accurate drivers on Tour with a strong approach game, and given the makeup of the layout, those will be important statistics. He is a former British Open champ so he knows the big stage, and Pebble Beach is ripe for his game.

Tony Finau +4550

Distance off the block isn’t a key ingredient this week, but Finau is one of the best at getting length with his driver. He’s also has a sound short game and avoids three-putts more than most. He’s been close a number of times and finished fifth at Shinnecock Hills last year after a strong third round. One of these days Finau is going to put it all together to claim that elusive first major championship.

Course: Pebble Beach Golf Links – 7,075 yards, Par 71

Hosting the U.S. Open for the sixth time and first since 2010, Pebble Beach is still quite familiar with the Tour since the Pro-Am is held here every year. This is a different layout, however, one that will play longer and much tougher. It’s still relatively short by Tour standards so distance off the tee isn’t a requirement. However, accuracy will be a big factor. The rough is thick and staying out of it is crucial. The greens are small targets making approach and GIR a key stat. The course is much different now than it was in February with smaller fairways and thicker rough.
