Memorial Tournament Matchup Odds and Picks

This week’s stop on the PGA Tour got a little more exciting with the announcement that Tiger Woods is going to compete in the Memorial Tournament. Woods didn’t play after winning The Masters and the layoff may have had something to do with his missed cut a month later at the PGA Championship. Woods climbed into the top-5 of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in five years and is one of seven top-10 golfers that will peg it up at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Take a look at the matchups and odds for the event that begins on Thursday.

Need to Know

A number of top players either missed the cut or had a poor weekend at Colonial and you can bet they are looking to rebound, especially with the U.S. Open just a few weeks away. No disrespect to Kevin Na, but he wasn’t high on the odds board, yet he came away with the Charles Schwab Challenge title. With the season’s third major around the corner, this week is much different, as you can tell by Woods’ entry. And Muirfield Village should play right into the hands of the top contenders. The Jack Nicklaus-designed layout stretches out to nearly 7,400 yards at par 72 and has wide fairways and fast greens. Despite the generous amount of grass, there is danger if players stray from the fairways. Bunkers defending the greens are tricky so we’ll see a number of players club down. This track does become a second-shot course making accuracy and iron play important tools.

Memorial Tournament Matchup Picks

Bryson DeChambeau +105 vs. Gary Woodland

Sometimes you have to take a risk in order to get a good payout, and throwing down on DeChambeau is definitely a risk. He barely missed the cut in his last three starts and confidence is certainly an issue. But returning as defending champion has to ignite positive thoughts, or at least he hopes it does. DeChambeau carded a 15-under last year and won in a playoff, so he knows the course. He also knows how to golf, as evidenced by his flaming hot start to the season when he finished in the top-15 with a title in his first six starts.

Jhonattan Vegas -110 vs. Adam Hadwin -120

Nicklaus-designed courses have a lot in common so it isn’t a stretch to compare past results on his tracks. Vegas has performed well this season and he has a nice track record on courses laid out by the Golden Bear. He has two career victories at the Nicklaus-designed Glen Abbey and his par 5 scoring stats are favorable, which will help with the length of Muirfield Village.

Matt Kuchar +105 vs. Patrick Cantlay

We can overlook a guy who’s had one or maybe two good tournaments here. But Kuchar has nailed it every time so we have to consider him in this matchup. Not only has Kootch tamed Muirfield with a win and 10 top-15 showings, he enters playing some quality golf. He has two wins and a pair of runner-up finishes this season to go along with three other top-10s in 14 starts. He was T8 in his most recent start at the PGA Championship.

Tiger Woods +105 vs. Justin Rose

Woods surprises us as much with his success as he does with his failures at this point. And his MC at the PGA Championship was a tremendous fail. Just a month prior he took down the field at The Masters for his first major title in over a decade, so he obviously has something in the tank. Tiger isn’t going to make the same mistake of not playing between majors and he’s had success with five titles and eight top-10s in 16 starts at this tournament. Muirfield plays to Tigers’ strength and I can see him making a run this week leaving his matchup partner behind.
