Need to Know

There are only a few things you need to know. First, the field is small with only 34 entrants. Second, everyone plays the entire weekend. And third, every golfer in the field has won at least one official PGA Tour event. Okay, there is one more thing. Serving as host since 1999, the Plantation Course at Kapalua underwent a massive remodel since last year’s event, which could make things a little more difficult, at least that was the plan. The layout was stretched to just under 7,600 yards, however, that’s not really a factor since it plays par 73 and elevation helps with flight. Some players will surely take advantage by being more aggressive on holes they wouldn’t normally take chances on. The fairways are wide and forgiving and the field will have numerous opportunities to let it rip. The large greens will benefit hot putters and the biggest hazard will likely be Mother Nature with coastal winds always kicking up to make things tricky.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Matchup Picks

Xander Schauffele +158 vs. Jon Rahm

You can’t hit it big if you don’t take a chance. And going against the betting favorite and the hottest player on the planet would definitely be taking a chance. But it’s a worthy gamble and one that would play handsomely for the plus-odds Schauffele. This is more a bet against Rahm since I’m wondering about his motivation after he cleaned up on the Euro circuit by winning the Race to Dubai and the DP World Tour Championship over one weekend. And the X-man is no slouch. He tied the course record with a final round 62 to win last year’s event, so I’m taking the odds.

Rickie Fowler +130 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Another plus-odds pick that’s just too good to pass up. Fowler has recovered from a brief illness and his nuptials and he’s ready to get back to work. He’s kind of fallen off the radar due to a poor finish to last season and it’s a good time to jump on him. Fowler got back into the swing of things with a top-10 at the Hero World Challenge, and he’s T4-5-T6 in his last three starts here.

Dustin Johnson -105 vs. Patrick Cantlay

I really hate to pile on Cantlay because he’s a fabulous golfer, but with a limited field and fewer matchups, it just kind of worked out that way. This is the perfect event for Johnson to regain his form after a quiet second half of last season and to work his way back after knee surgery. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and DJ has thrived with wins here in 2013 and 2018. And I think DJ more than anyone will use this event as a stepping stone.

Gary Woodland +105 vs. Patrick Reed

Boy, this was another close call where you could flip a coin to pick a matchup winner. Reed has been outstanding since changing his mental approach to the game and he cleaned up on the Euro circuit a few months ago. But Woodland has some unfinished business on the island after being overtaken by Schauffele last year, and he’s had three top-10s in his last four worldwide starts.
