Memorial Tournament Golf Matchups

The house that Jack built plays host this week as the PGA Tour heads to Dublin, Ohio and Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament. Legendary Jack Nicklaus designed the course that opened in the 1970s. With COVID forcing changes to the schedule last year the Tour made two stops at Muirfield in consecutive weeks. Betting favorite Jon Rahm posted his fifth Tour title at the Memorial with Collin Morikawa emerging victorious in the WGC Workday a week prior. The course will look different from previous playings having undergone a major renovation immediately following last year’s Memorial so course history could be less of a factor. It’s still a strong field with seven of the OWGR top-10 pegging it up making for some intriguing matchups. Need to Know

As mentioned in the opener Muirfield had a major overhaul adding length and trees with reconfigured bunkers and greens. The course can stretch to over 7,500 yards, but bombers have narrower corridors with the addition of trees that could negate the distance advantage. Thick rough puts an emphasis on hitting fairways and the greens are fast with not much slope. It will be tough to hit the dance floor but easier to make putts. As far as difficulty goes Muirfield is up there playing right into the hands of the top contenders. As we’ve seen in past events on this course strong iron play is a key to success.

Memorial Tournament Matchup Picks

Jordan Spieth +115 vs. Jon Rahm

It’s hard to go against the favorite, but Spieth is making the most of his return to prominence and I’m counting on that run to continue at a venue that’s yielded him good results. He has a pair of top-10s and an additional three top-20s in eight starts here, but the unknown could pose a problem. Not to worry, Spieth has been on fire since February with six top-5 finishes among his nine top-15s over his past 11 starts. It’s hard to pass on a plus-odds player with that success.

Rickie Fowler +100 vs. Gary Woodland

Can Fowler follow Spieth as the latest star to regain his form? He’s had his ups and downs at Muirfield over the years much like his game currently. There were signs Fowler was about to turn a corner when he landed a T17 in the Texas Open. Following two MCs he was in the hunt at the PGA Championship finishing T8. He also has three top-15s in his past seven Memorial starts. He also has four MCs in that span, but I’ll back Fowler since his current form is more stable than what we’ve seen previously.

Shane Lowry -105 vs. Cameron Smith

How can you go wrong with an Irishman playing in Dublin? That and the fact that Lowry has been solid over the past few months make this pick inviting. He’s made the cut in his last six stroke-play events with half of those ending in a top-10. His best result in that stretch was a few weeks ago when he finished T4 at Kiawah Island. He’s performed well in the stat areas that make a difference at Muirfield and some help from the putter could put him over the top. I’m just backing him in this matchup, though.

Xander Schauffele -120 vs. Patrick Cantlay

What happened a few weeks ago should in inspire Schauffele. A rare missed cut in a major sent the X-man home early to lick his wounds. And while the buzz surrounding him has seemingly faded he’s still been a consistent performer. His previous three starts before Kiawah Island resulted in three top-20s, including a T3 at the Masters, so maybe he was due for a letdown. He doesn’t miss the cut twice in a row making Schauffele a smart play despite the price.

Jason Day -135 vs. Adam Scott

I’m second-guessing myself on this pick but I feel Day will rise to the occasion in what is a home game. Not only is Day a Buckeye state resident he’s also a MVGC member and he could possibly have inside information on the new course design. The return of Spieth and upsets in the last two tournaments are encouraging signs for the Australian, who’s finished outside the top-30 four times with three MC’s in his last seven outings.
