Memorial Tournament Golf Matchups

A strong field is assembled at the house that Jack built for this week’s Memorial Tournament. A PGA Tour stop since 1976, Jack Nicklaus was the inspiration behind the design of Muirfield Village Golf Club, though the course underwent a massive remodel following Jon Rahm’s victory in 2020. Rahm was on his way to a repeat last year with a six-shot lead after 54 holes but he had to withdraw after a positive COVID test leaving the door open for Patrick Cantlay and Collin Morikawa to duke it out in a playoff. Cantlay emerged with his second Memorial title in three years and all three are set to peg it up again. Rahm sits atop the outright odds board and with unfinished business he’s a strong pick in matchups, though he’s heavily favored. With seven of the top-10 players in the world competing we have a number of intriguing matchups. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

As mentioned Muirfield Village had a major facelift in 2020 adding length and trees with reconfigured bunkers and greens. That didn’t affect the field much last year with Cantlay and Morikawa finishing at 13-under. The course plays over 7,500 yards with fairway relief for big hitters. However, thick rough puts an emphasis on hitting fairways and making putts is always a determining factor. That was much easier for the limited field last year and tame conditions should help this week. As far as difficulty goes Muirfield is up there playing right into the hands of the top contenders. And as we’ve seen in past on this course strong iron play is a key to success.

Memorial Tournament Matchup Picks

Davis Riley +129 vs. Mito Pereira

I’m always in search of value picks in matchups and I came across Riley at this price that really stood out. Riley has played a lot of golf recently but why rest when he’s on such an impressive run? Over his last five starts he finished no worse than T13 with three top-5s. Most recently he was T4 at the Schwab and he leads the rookie class with six top-10s. He goes against fellow rookie Pereira, who’s trying to overcome his meltdown a few weeks ago at the PGA. At his price Riley offers great value.

Max Homa +100 vs. Corey Conners

Another player I think has tremendous value is Homa, who has two wins on Tour this season and has been consistently good for a long stretch. He’s 14 for 16 with his last MC in January. Since then he has six top-20s in eight individual stroke-play events, including a win at the Wells Fargo last month. He’s making a fourth straight appearance in this event with the familiarity paying off with a T6 last year.

Will Zalatoris -105 vs. Joaquin Niemann

The Tour leader in strokes gained: tee to green seemingly makes Zalatoris an optimal fit for Muirfield Village. And I expect he’ll bounce back from a MC last week just like he did the previous time he exited early. The Z-man missed the cut at the Byron Nelson only to rebound with a playoff loss in the PGA Championship. Maybe the hurt over losing was a reason why the Schwab wasn’t to his liking. Anyway, outside those two MCs he’s 4 of 4 placing among the top-6 each time.

Jon Rahm -165 vs. Patrick Cantlay

I rarely if ever back someone at Rahm’s price in a matchup. But this is a different situation with the Spaniard looking to avenge his certain victory from last year. And beating the guy he conceded first place to makes this matchup even more special to watch. Rahm stumbled at the PGA Championship but he did win in Mexico the start before and he has a win at Muirfield Village in 2020. He had a six-swing bulge over Cantlay last year before COVID struck denying him a chance to repeat.

Jordan Spieth -109 vs. Viktor Hovland

Flashing good form and with a strong history at Muirfield Village makes Spieth my pick in this matchup. Going about his business for a T7 last week coupled with a win and runner-up in three previous starts puts Spieth in a good spot. Last year he placed 18th for his third straight top-20 and sixth in nine career starts here.
