John Deere Classic Golf Matchups

Just a few weeks ahead of the season’s fourth and final major most big names on the PGA Tour are using the time to rest. Thus we have a slimmed down field gathering in the Quad Cities area for the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. Nine of the top 50 players in the OWGR are the most this tournament has seen in over a decade yet the opening odds suggest a wide open race to the title. Denny McCarthy has yet to win a PGA Tour event but is slotted as the favorite in the outright market as one of three players with shorter than 20/1 odds. Defending champ J.T. Poston led wire-to-wire for his second career Tour title but finds himself well down the odds board in his bid for a repeat. Several former winners of this event along with some of the games brightest young stars make for intriguing matchups. Visit BookMaker.eu to check out the latest matchup odds and to place your wager.

Need to Know

The good news is that TPC Deere Run, which has hosted this event since 2000, has yielded low scores over the years. The last 13 winners averaged 21-under with 10 of them finishing at -20 or better on the 7,289-yard, par-71 layout. Poston became just the third wire-to-wire winner in the 50-year history finishing three shots clear of Emiliano Grillo and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and all are scheduled to peg it up. In 2018 Michael Kim set a tournament scoring record at 27-under 257 to win by eight swings proving that anyone can come up large at the JDC. Deere Run is largely unchanged from last year with wide fairways keeping balls in play giving short accurate hitters an edge to the green. The course typically offers up a number of birdie opportunities and the field has taken advantage in the past.

John Deere Classic Matchup Picks

Denny McCarthy +100 vs. Russell Henley

You don’t see the favorite in the outright playing as a dog in a matchup which is why I jumped on the chance to throw down on McCarthy. I guess there isn’t a true favorite in a field like this and Henley could easily be the guy so a close battle is expected. McCarthy’s overall outlook has me backing him with a playoff loss and a T7 among three straight top 20s. He also has nine top 20s in his past 15 starts and placed T6 here last year. I’ll back the outright favorite at even money.

Emiliano Grillo -115 vs. Chris Kirk

If Grillo plays as well as he did in debut at Deere Run I have a winner in this matchup. And I’d be kicking myself for not dropping a few bucks in the outright market. He led the field in GIR last year to finish T2. And he’s playing solid golf coming in just over a month removed from a win at the Schwab one of four top 15s since mid-April. One of those was in his last start at the Travelers with four sub-70 rounds.

Seamus Power -110 vs. Byeong Hun An

I mentioned Power’s likeness for similar fields when backing him for the outright and I’ll use the same reasoning for this matchup pick. His two wins have been in fields like he’s facing this week and his torrid start to the season still has me backing him though he’s cooled off. Power won the Bermuda Championship last October and ironically defeated defending champ Poston in a playoff to claim the Barbasol title in 2021. This is exactly what he needs to get back in a groove.

Stephan Jaeger -115 vs. Alex Smalley

Jaeger has been consistent all season with only three MCs in 24 starts. However, he hasn’t been good enough to consider for the outright. Put him in a matchup, though, and I’ll gladly take my chances with the veteran. He’s 8 for 8 since the middle of April finishing among the top 27 five times and he matched his best finish of the season just last week with a T9 in Detroit.

Adam Schenk -105 vs. Adam Hadwin

A native middle-American, Schenk has performed his best in this part of the country and he has a nice track record at Deere Run making him worthy of consideration. Prior to his WD in last year’s tournament, Schenk was T4-T6 in his previous two starts. He also collected a pair of T7s at recent events in Ohio and Michigan.
