The John Deere Classic used to have the unenviable position of being in a bad spot on the PGA Tour schedule, as it took place the week before the Open Championship, but it now takes place two weeks before the Open. Many of the top players in the world bypass this event, as they don’t want to play this tournament and then fly across the globe for the Open, but at least with two weeks in between the two events, at least a few top players will be in the field. There are always some players like Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson, and Steve Stricker who will play this event and this year Cameron Young will be one of the top players in the field. The title sponsor of this event is John Deere, but their sponsorship deal runs out after the 2023 tournament and it is uncertain if it will be renewed going forward.

TPC Deere Run is located in the community of Silvis, Illinois which is part of the Quad Cities. This event first started in 1971 as the Quad Cities Open and it became an official PGA Tour event in 1972. It was held at its current home at TPC Deere Run in 2000. The event has had some interesting moments, as in 2005 and 2006 it offered a sponsor’s exemption to Michelle Wie and in 2013 it featured Jordan Spieth winning as a teenager.

TPC Deere Run is a normal PGA Tour course which means most players are not going to play this event because the Open Championship in a couple of week is a links course. It doesn’t help that players have to travel over six time zones to play in both events. TPC Deere Run is located along the Rock River and was designed by D.A. Weibring Golf Resources. Weibring is an Illinois native and he used the natural contours to make a challenging course. “It has all the things I think you’d like to have in a golf course,” said Weibring. “There are elevation changes, great views and scenery, hardwood trees. You have the Rock River complemented with small ponds and deep ravines… and best of all, there’s no real estate. What’s more, the natural features of the former Arabian horse farm high above the Rock River Valley have not been compromised.”

Many players have commented how much they like playing this course. “The course is awesome.  It’s one of the most underrated, I think, TPC courses.” Jordan Spieth said, “I’ve played probably four or five TPC courses.  It’s one of my favorites.”

Former winner Zach Johnson said that he loves playing this event. “I’m just extremely comfortable here. I love coming back…There’s just a peace about it here for me that I don’t have at many other tournaments, and you know, I think it starts certainly with the people. It starts with what John Deere does here for us and my family, our families, the TOUR’s families, and then I love the golf course. I mean, I love these greens.”
