Need to Know

The Renaissance Club was designed by Tom Doak back in 2008. It is a links course but it has a modern feel. The course has the normal pot bunkers and the greens are really fast. The course plays just under 7,300 yards and it has five par 3’s and three par 5’s. The course is greatly affected by the weather, as Xander Schauffele won by shooting 7-under par last year when the weather was a big factor. The weather is expected to be cool this week with rain in the forecast for Friday and Sunday could be when the weather is the biggest factor with rain and wind in the forecast.

Genesis Scottish Open Matchup Picks

Patrick Cantlay -145 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

Cantlay finished in a tie for 4th in his last tournament which was the Travelers Championship. He finished in a tie for 4th in this tournament last year. He ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in totals strokes gained. He is first in total driving so he should thrive on this links course. Cantlay is simply a better overall player than Fitzpatrick, so I will lay the price.

Viktor Hovland -115 vs. Rickie Fowler

Hovland won the Memorial in early June and in his last event he tied for 29th in the Travelers. He ranks 13th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained. He is fourth in total driving. I know that Fowler is having a big season, but he got his win a couple weeks ago and I don’t know that he will be entirely focused with the Open coming up next week. I’ll take Hovland in this matchup.

Thomas Detry -115 vs. Brian Harman

Detry is one of the longest hitters out there and in this matchup he goes against Harman who is one of the shorter hitters. I know that short hitters can still win on a links course, but I always give the edge to those that bomb it. I’ll take Detry in this matchup.

Tom Kim -115 vs. Lucas Herbert

I noted in the odds preview that I give Kim a good chance to contend this week. He is listed at longshot odds but Kim has proven he can compete and beat the best golfers in the world. He finished highly last year in this event and I think he is the clear choice in this matchup against Herbert.

Min Woo Lee -120 vs. Justin Thomas

I have to admit that I am shocked at how poorly Thomas has been playing. It used to be that Thomas would be a sure thing in matchups against players who are not supposed to be at his level, but not this year. Lee is actually playing better than Thomas and it is not by accident that he is favored. I’ll take Lee in this matchup.
