FedEx St. Jude Championship Golf Odds

The first leg of the FedExCup playoffs takes place this week with the top 70 players in the standings earning a spot in the field for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The number of players was reduced from 125 in previous years leaving a few big names on the shelf. Most notably was former FedExCup champion Justin Thomas, who finished 71st in the standings. If the stakes aren’t high enough this is the only playoff tournament with a cut, so things will get intense with the top 50 in the standings after this weekend moving on to the BMW Championship. It’s not surprising to see the three best players positioned at the top of the odds board. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite with FedExCup leader Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy second favorites on the opening PGA odds. They are the only players with shorter than 10/1 odds. Defending champ Will Zalatoris will not defend his title as he continues to recover from a back injury. BookMaker.eu has a complete updated list of betting odds when you’re ready to make a wager.

Odds Analysis

Tommy Fleetwood +3000

Could it be that Zalatoris started a trend last year with his first PGA title coming in a playoff tournament? Maybe, and Fleetwood is just the guy to keep the streak going, if you can call it a streak. You can’t complain about his recent form making the Englishman a sleeper in a stacked field. Fleetwood nearly got that maiden win at the Canadian Open losing in a playoff. He also racked up a T5 at the U.S. Open and T6 at the Genesis Scottish Open while settling for a T10 at The Open. His MC at the Travelers in the middle of the run came despite carding a pair of 69s.

Rickie Fowler +3000

It’s no fun backing the favorites and besides the guys at the top of the odds board weren’t around last year. With so many fantastic players it pays to take a look down the list. Fowler’s comeback season punctuated by a playoff win seems only fitting, and at his price there’s value. Fowler ended a lengthy drought with a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and he’s been steady all season with just two MCs and eight top 10s in 22 starts.

Russell Henley +4500

Another solid player, Henley offers plenty of value at his price thanks to some great results over the past several months. Starting with a top 20 at THE PLAYERS, Henley has 10 paydays in 12 starts with nine of those cracking the top 20. And he’s coming off one of his better outings grabbing a share of second at the Wyndham Championship where he carded an opening 62.

Max Homa +4000

Thanks to a sizzling start to the season that included two wins and a runner-up by February, Homa built up enough of a cushion in the standings to withstand a mid-season slump. He’s seemingly gotten things straightened out making him a value pick at his price. Home ended a string of two MCs with a T21 at the RMC followed by a T12 in the Scottish Open and most recently a T10 at The Open.

Viktor Hovland +2200

I don’t think anybody’s been as consistent as Hovland this season playing the weekend in all 20 starts with 15 of those resulting in a top 25. Among those are a win at the Memorial and runner-up at the PGA Championship. He’s performed best at the bigger events with top 20s in all four majors and THE PLAYERS. His accurate drives and clutch irons make him a natural for TPC Southwind with a breakthrough potentially this week.

Course: TPC Southwind – 7,243 yards, Par 70

A PGA Tour host since 1989, TPC Southwind was elevated to WGC status in 2019 and hosts the opening playoff tournament for a second straight year. It’s a stock par 70 that stretches to 7,243 yards and is similar to what the field saw a few weeks ago at TPC Twin Cities, which should make several players in the field happy. With narrow fairways, long and straight off the tee is a bonus. But this is more of a second-shot course and hitting greens in regulation is huge. Besides the overall length, bunkers were remodeled a few years back to present more of a defense. Water also comes into play on several holes giving strong iron players an advantage. Going off around 25/1 Zalatoris prevailed over Sepp Straka in last year’s edition shooting 15-under for his first PGA Tour title.
