Odds Analysis

Tony Finau +1200

A unique course means players with experience on the layout could have an edge. Finau has been a constant performer at Colonial and he’s done well. Coupled with the solid season he’s having, Finau is a solid choice. A two-time winner this season, Finau hasn’t been his typical steady self since winning in Mexico last month. This is a perfect spot for him to regain that magic with two top 5s and three top 20s in his last four appearances. He’s never missed the cut here also making him attractive in alternate markets.

Rickie Fowler +2800

I keep backing Fowler since his game has progressed this season. He stumbled last week with a MC at Oak Hill, however, prior to that he collected nine top 20s while playing the weekend in 12 straight starts. Colonial got the better of Fowler during his slump, but now that he’s seemingly out of that funk we could see the player that registered three top 20s during his glory days. I’m not about to put the good times behind him, though, and I think Fowler is due for a breakthrough.

Collin Morikawa +1600

The course appears to be a natural fit for Morikawa’s game and he’s played well at Colonial in the past going 3 for 3 with a runner-up in 2020 and top 15 the next year. And though he’s yet to win this season, Morikawa is playing solid golf with four top 10s among his six top 25s. He also stopped a stretch of two consecutive MCs by finishing T26 at Oak Hill. Deadly accurate off the tee with a strong iron game, Morikawa should take advantage of the narrow corridors. And we saw his short game come around last week, which had to be a relief for him.

Justin Rose +2800

Rose had the ultimate success at Colonial in 2018 when he won by three swings with a 20-under. That’s the lowest to par score since 2010. He also had a nice run making the cut in eight straight starts before a MC last year. Included in that stretch were a podium in 2020 and an additional two top 20s getting the full experience of the layout. Recent form is strong with two top 10s among his four top 25s in his last five starts. Rose is coming off a T9 at the PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth +1200

Despite a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the Byron Nelson, Spieth toughed it out last week with a tournament low 69 on Sunday for a T29. And he’d have to be in a lot of pain to miss this event. He always plays well in his home state and has racked up a number of big finishes at Colonial with three runners-up along with a win in 2016. Spieth placed among the top 10 in eight of his 10 career starts, so it’s safe to say he likes Colonial, and I like his chances.

Course: Colonial Country Club – 7,209 yards, Par 70

Colonial is the longest running host layout of any non-major event, so there is plenty of history. At just over 7,200 yards, the course has always played at par 70 and is average in terms of length compared to other Tour tracks. It’s never been a course for big hitters with precision and accuracy playing a bigger role while rewarding consistent ball-striking. Narrow fairways and greens defended by bunkers make second shots crucial. Every course has a signature hole or holes, and Colonial is no different. Known as the Horrible Horseshoe, holes 3, 4 and 5 can impact scores. The par-4 fifth is the most difficult with No. 3 and No. 4 close behind. The course is set to undergo a huge renovation after the conclusion of this year’s Schwab.
