Charles Schwab Challenge Golf Matchups

The Charles Schwab Challenge will always be a special event on the PGA Tour. It was the first tournament played after the Tour shut down for a period of time due to COVID and despite following the second major of the season it always draws a strong field. This year is no different with a number of highly-ranked golfers set to tee it up at Colonial Country Club. It will be tough to duplicate the drama at the PGA Championship but Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris are back to give it a shot after dueling in extra holes for the Wanamaker Trophy. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opened as the outright betting favorite but has since been overtaken by Thomas and Jordan Spieth at the top of the odds board. Jason Kokrak is back to defend his title, but faces stiff competition from a field that presents countless wagering opportunities in matchups. Need to Know

Colonial Country Club has hosted this event since 1946 while remaining relatively unchanged, so there won’t be many surprises. The course tops out at 7,209 yards making it average in terms of length. It’s a stock par-70 that will play much easier than Southern Hills, but it’s also a Perry Maxwell design so there are some similarities. Going long off the tee is always a plus, but length isn’t a major factor on the. Hitting the smaller greens is a bigger concern, and of course making putts is always a difference-maker. The par-4 fifth has been the most difficult hole in every playing since 2005 and is part of what’s called the “Horrible Horseshoe.” Scoring has been low over the years but conditions could change things.

Charles Schwab Challenge Matchup Picks

Max Homa -109 vs. Sam Burns

In a matchup between golfers who have performed well of late I’m backing the value in Homa, whose two wins this season are second only to Scheffler. He won the Wells Fargo earlier this month and followed with his best finish in a major with a T13 last week. He placed inside the top-30 here in 2019 only to follow the next year with a MC. He’s making his first start at Colonial since then with his game in a much better place and added perspective.

Sungjae Im -119 vs. Daniel Berger

Im always seems to be lurking at the top of the leaderboard with his only negative being the number of tournaments he plays. Well, that was taken care of last week when he missed the PGA due to COVID, so being rested and restless could have its advantages in this matchup. In fact it’s been a month since Im last pegged it up in New Orleans, which followed a T21 at the RBC Heritage and T8 at the Masters. He’s 14 for 16 this season with 10 top-25s and a good pick in this matchup.

Jason Kokrak +103 vs. Talor Gooch

A number of folks say course knowledge plays a role at Colonial and based on that I have to back the defending champ in this matchup. And the price isn’t too bad either. Kokrak was 14-under after three rounds last year closing with a par-70 to win by two shots. He finished with the same 14-under the previous year claiming a podium finish, so he knows how to handle himself on this course.

Collin Morikawa -104 vs. Viktor Hovland

This is an interesting matchup simply because the players are two of the brightest young stars in the game and they’ve both been impressive. Earlier this year Hovland had a run of three straight top-10s and Morikawa opened the season with five straight top-10s, including a T5 in the unofficial Hero World Challenge. The determining factor was history at Colonial. Morikawa is looking to avenge his 2020 playoff loss, coming close with a T14 last year. And his price is right.

Gary Woodland +116 vs. Harold Varner III

Always on the lookout for value picks I came across Woodland and was astounded to see him at this price. He missed the cut twice in four starts since a T8 at the Texas Open, but he has a good history at Colonial that includes a solo ninth in 2020 and T14 last year while authoring a 67.88 scoring average in those eight rounds. Again, with course form and knowledge being an indicator, Woodland is a high value target.
