BMW Championship Golf Matchups

The FedExCup playoff field has been whittled down to the top 50 in the standings with those players gathering this week just outside of Chicago at Olympia Fields Golf Club for the BMW Championship. Lucas Glover is the hottest player in the field with two straight wins after last week’s playoff triumph at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He’ll have to contend with another two-time winner in defending champ Patrick Cantlay, who successfully navigated different courses to become the first back-to-back winner in the 16-year history of the tournament. But it’s the top three who remain the outright betting favorites with Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm listed in that order. That’s also the order the trio holds in the world rankings. Any golfer in the field has the potential to win making for some interesting matchups. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

Nearly half the field was around in 2020 when Olympia Fields hosted its first BMW Championship, including that year’s winner Jon Rahm, who prevailed over Dustin Johnson in a playoff. We saw how difficult the North Course on the property is with only five players scoring under par with the winner at -4. There were some unusual stats worth noting from 2020. At 7,366 yards the course is lengthy, however, the average distance of all drives was less than 300 yards. And the overall scoring average was 71.82 on the par 70 layout. Not much has changed in the three years since with every stick in the bag needed when dealing with tree-lined fairways, thick rough and unfamiliar greens.

BMW Championship Matchup Picks

Tommy Fleetwood +100 vs. Viktor Hovland

I mentioned in the outright article that Fleetwood is a good target in alternate markets. Well, this is another betting market and true to my word I’m backing the Englishman. There’s a lot to like about Hovland’s game, which is why he’s the favorite. But there’s also good things going on with Fleetwood’s game and at even-money his price is what I like. Fleetwood has shown the ability to adapt to different layouts and he’s playing as well as ever with three top 5s among his five top 10s in his last six starts.

Sungjae Im +113 vs. Tyrrell Hatton

The knock against Im is that he plays too much golf, if there even is such a thing. And doing too much of anything can cause you to hit a wall. Im did that with his game earlier in the season with an uncharacteristic stretch of three MCs in four starts. He also had a MC at the 3M Open last month but rebounded with the kind of golf we’ve become accustomed to seeing from him. He finished T6 last week following a T14 in the Wyndham Championship and looks to be back.

Harris English +100 vs. Sepp Straka

After all he went through last year I think English is just happy to be here. He snuck into the field at No. 49 in the standings and really has nothing to lose moving forward. He’s been consistent with six paydays in his last seven starts, though only two of those placed him among the top 12. Still, he’s shown over the course of his career that big things can happen and with a relaxed attitude he can perform like he did with partner Matt Kuchar at the QBE Shootout.

Jon Rahm +120 vs. Rory McIlroy

There are several matchups with the game’s top players but I really like this one. You won’t often get Rahm at this price, and even though he’s matched with the red-hot McIlroy I still like Rahm’s chances. The Spaniard rarely puts back-to-back poor performances together and his T37 last week qualifies. And there wasn’t a need to go all out since his spot in the playoff is taken care of. This week, though, there’s more urgency to his game and he played this course better than anyone in 2020 making me a beliver.

Max Homa -110 vs. Collin Morikawa

Homa successfully made the transition to the upper echelon of Tour players with an outstanding last season. And that run has continued with his first top 10 in a major last month at The Open one of his 10 top 10s in 22 starts. Since back to back MCs in June, Homa has put together finishes of T21-T12-T10-T6 showing his game is in fine form.
