Barbasol Championship Golf Matchups

Serving as an alternate field event to The Open, the The Barbasol Championship will attract a field of younger players and savvy veterans fighting for status on the PGA Tour and valuable FedEx Cup points. And like The Open, last year’s event was shuttered due to COVID giving Jim Herman an extended stay as defending champion. Herman will attempt to become the first two-time winner of this event, though this is only the sixth edition. It’s also the third straight held at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky with scoring off the charts in the previous two. Charl Schwartzel is the highest ranked player in the field yet he’s fourth on the odds board behind Patrick Rodgers, Seamus Power and Luke List. All of the favorites are featured in matchups with updated odds available at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to make a wager.

Need to Know

These alternate field events are ripe for the taking for some young stud looking to make his mark. The field is littered with Korn Ferry Tour players and the event has that kind of atmosphere. Don’t mistake the watered down field for a lack of talent, though. And the straightforward layout at Keene Trace has led to some phenomenal scoring. Troy Merritt was 23-under to win by a swing in 2018. And in 2019 scoring was even lower with Herman torching the layout with a 26-under 262. The 2019 field carded a Tour record 114 eagles over four days. Keene Trace has consistently ranked among the top-five in the state’s course rankings, but it hasn’t gotten the better of the field in the previous two editions.

Barbasol Championship Matchup Picks

Charl Schwartzel -132 vs. Russell Knox

Probably the biggest name in the field, at least he’s the highest ranked according to the OWGR, Schwartzel enters on a run of solid form and should be considered in the outright market as well. His price is a little steep, but I’ve gone with bigger favorites in the past, and there’s plenty to like about Schwartzel. The biggest concern is how motivated will he be since he’s not playing with the big boys? Well a win’s a win. The South African grabbed a top-20 last time out at the U.S. Open and has finished inside the top-25 in five of his last seven outings.

Luke List -118 vs. Seamus Power

I wavered a bit on this pick before flipping a coin. That’s not how I ended up backing List but it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea. Both players enter off solid efforts with List getting some good news on a personal level as well. He led midway through the John Deere Classic finishing T4 to secure his Tour card. With two top-10s in the previous three events he played to its entirety, look for List to make a charge at his first Tour victory.

Henrik Norlander -109 vs. Richy Werenski

Norlander has been a boost for me in the matchup market so I’m sticking with him this week at an event and course that seems to fit his game perfectly. The Swede also enters on a strong stretch making the cut in his last four starts, and that’s half the battle. He was solid last week with four red numbers to earn a T28 and like List he’s searching for that maiden PGA Tour win. Both players have a good shot at getting it in this field.

Chesson Hadley +106 vs. JT Poston

A deflating runner-up finish in the Palmetto Championship last month seemed to inspire Hadley. It’s been a roller coaster ride this season with more MCs than made, but he’s played the weekend in three of his last four starts and looks to build off that T2 at Congaree when he led by four shots after 54 holes. He’s been consistent the last two times out scoring a combined 17-under and he led in Detroit last week after an opening 63. Now he just needs to put it all together.

Kevin Tway -111 vs. Will Gordon -119

Whatever Tway did to improve his game seemed to work. After going nearly two years without even sniffing a top-25, he has two in his last two starts and he’s played the weekend in each of his last three. The run began with a T14 in the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks ago and continued in Detroit last week with a T23 when he closed with a 64. He has to feel good about his game and I feel good about his chances in this matchup.
