LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah Matchups Odds

The second of back-to-back stops concludes with the LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah this week in a return to the Saudi-backed series roots. The final individual competition of the brief season takes place at one of the breathtaking courses in Saudi Arabia, Royal Greens Golf & Country Club. Host to the Saudi International for the past four years, more than half the field of 48 pegged it up back in February with Harold Varner III emerging with a 1-shot victory. Dustin Johnson has had all kinds of success on this layout with two wins and runner-up, and he just won the season-long individual competition adding another $18 million to his bank account. DJ sits at the top of the outright odds board and is featured in several matchups. But you have to wonder just how motivated he’s going to be. Need to Know

Just when you think you have things figured out you realize that you don’t. I was on a nice heater with my matchup picks entering last week’s competition but took a gut punch missing on all my picks. I’m still up for the season, though things got a little tighter with the Bangkok disaster. It’s on to Saudi Arabia with the Series taking over Royal Greens Golf & Country Club. The 7,010-yard layout is relatively short but by no means is it easy. The wide open design is typical for the area but a little deceiving with plenty of bunkers, water and natural defenses in the way. Varner carded a 13-under winning on this track in February and just about everyone in the field has had a twirl around the property at one point. This week is a bit different than what we’ve seen with tournaments in consecutive weeks. It might take some getting used to especially for those who have competed from the start when there were several weeks between events. The LIV season concludes Oct. 28-30 with the team championship at Trump National Doral in Miami.

LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah Matchup Picks

Harold Varner III -125 vs. Louis Oosthuizen

Looking forward to a return to the site of his last victory may have inspired Varner, who had his best finish in the LIV series with a T6 in Bangkok. Varner is peaking at the right time and showed his varied skillset last week. That also allowed him to triumph back in February winning the Saudi International by one shot at 13-under.

Cameron Smith -101 vs. Dustin Johnson

There are a number of factors that have me leaning toward Smith in this matchup. First, there’s not much left for DJ to play for after winning the season-long individual title and cash that comes with it. What scares me, though, is the success Johnson has had at this venue with a win and runner-up in three starts. That’s hard to ignore, but I’m doing it and instead counting on Smith to rebound from a horrible performance last week that saw him finish 42nd.

Brooks Koepka +104 vs. Patrick Reed

Two PGA Tour vets had their own little battle last week with Reed finishing three-swings better than Koepka in Bangkok. I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t throw down on Brooks in that competition. I’m doing it this week with Koepka looking better and better every week getting his game back to where it once was. And since I’m always looking for same value in my matchup picks I found it here with plus-odds on Koepka.

Abraham Ancer -125 vs. Sergio Garcia

The Spaniard and the Mexican going head to head in Saudi Arabia sounds like a movie plot. Instead it takes place on the golf course, and though I don’t always back favorites at such a high price, the choices are limited in a smaller field. And after last week’s disaster I really need to get back in the win column. Ancer showed a spark last week placing among the top-10 while Sergio’s spurt came to an end. Garcia had three straight top-10s end in Bangkok and as we’ve seen from him in the past his funks tend to last a few weeks.

Phil Mickelson -101 vs. Pat Perez

Mickelson has quietly moved up the leaderboard the past few tournaments putting those early season struggles behind him. Finishing no better than 34th in his first four starts was disappointing, but Lefty put a sold 66 to close a top-10 in Chicago and followed with three sub-70s in Bangkok to finish 17th. Perez hasn’t been as lucky with only one finish inside the top-30 in his six LIV starts. The value needle is pointing directly at Lefty in this matchup.
