LIV Golf Bedminster Matchups Odds

LIV Golf heads back to a familiar setting with the field gathering at Trump National Golf Club for this week’s LIV Golf Bedminster. Trump National hosted the third tournament of the inaugural LIV season with Henrik Stenson emerging victorious in his first LIV start. While that’s a nice storyline the bigger headline-grabber is the play of Bryson DeChambeau at Greenbrier. DeChambeau obliterated the course and the field with scores of 61 and 58 to close out a dominant 6-shot win for his first LIV title. The result vaulted DeChambeau to the top of the outright odds board with the usual suspects close behind. Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Talor Gooch, Dustin Johnson and Mito Pereira are the next five on the opening line with odds of 14/1 or shorter. Just in its second season LIV Golf is an infant, but there is a history at Trump National with 34 of the 48 players returning to Somerset County, New Jersey. Need to Know

Stretched to nearly 7,600 yards at par 71, Trump National is a beefy layout with forgiving fairways that big hitters will like. However, there are numerous strategically-placed bunkers and water traps throughout the property to serve as a defense. Tucked away in Somerset County roughly 50 miles from New York City, Trump National has been ranked among the top 100 courses in the world since it opened. The course hosted the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open and was slated to entertain the 2022 PGA Championship. However, the Tour got all political saying it would be “detrimental to the PGA of America brand.” Defending champ Stenson is one of 34 players who took a twirl around the Old Course last year with the top five scoring 7-under or better for the three-day tournament. A four-hole stretch on the back nine is arguably the most difficult with the longest par 3 (14th), longest par 4 (17th) and longest par 5 (15th) on the property included.

LIV Golf Bedminster Matchup Picks

Harold Varner III -115 vs. Cameron Tringale

Getting more comfortable in the LIV setting has aroused Varner with his game taking major strides over the last few months. He’s a big hitter that should enjoy blasting away and improved putting has put him among the top players recently. His four best finishes this season have come in the last six tournaments, including his first LIV win at DC in May. He also has a fourth in Tulsa and last time out was a strong 14-under to place sixth at Greenbrier. Trump National appears to be a good fit for his game which is why I also backed HV3 in the outright.

Matthew Wolff -101 vs. Peter Uihlein

Only one player in the matchup odds listed above is at plus odds so the next best thing is even money. Wolff is one player with value at his price after showing his resurgence with a strong outing last week. It’s been a struggle for Wolff over the last few years dealing with personal issues, but when he’s right the game is solid. He burst onto the scene a few years ago with his first pro win in just his third start and if last week’s top 5 is any indication we could see better things at Bedminster.

Phil Mickelson -101 vs. Bernd Wiesberger

Sticking with the close to even money theme I’m backing Mickelson in this matchup of underachievers. For Mickelson age could be playing a factor in his demise. I’m not sure what Wiesberger’s excuse is. Trump National is a course that will help Lefty’s game with generous fairways and it’s time Phil does something to earn the gazillion dollars he was paid to be face of LIV Golf. This is a gamble backing Mickelson, who’s finished inside the top 15 just once this season. But it’s better than his counterpart.

Dustin Johnson -115 vs. Patrick Reed

We saw Johnson battle his way to a share of second at Bedminster last year as part of his run that included six top eight showings in seven starts. He’s been solid this season with a win in Tulsa a few months back his second. While not as consistently good as last season, DJ is a threat at Trump National with stats that should have him contending. He’s among the leaders in driving distance, GIR and birdie average.

Henrik Stenson -115 vs. Louis Oosthuizen

With his first LIV start being a win in Bedminster last year it’s hard to ignore Stenson in this matchup. He hasn’t come close to duplicating the feat but he’s fared much better recently with his two best finishes coming in his last four starts. Stenson placed fifth in DC and was ninth in London last month. He also had a strong close at Greenbrier going 8-under over the final 36 holes to land inside the top 30.
