Scottish Open Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. This course in East Lothian was used for the Scottish Open in 2015 when Rickie Fowler won. Fowler beat Matt Kuchar and Raphael Jacquelin by a one shot. This is a links course that is very undulating so drives are going to roll a long way down some of the hills. The greens are small and well protected by bunkers. Hitting the ball a long way and scrambling are two key stats to consider for this week.

Rickie Fowler +130 vs. Justin Rose

I don’t get the price on this matchup at all. I know Rose is considered a top European player but Fowler won on this course three years ago. And keep in mind that Rose has just one top ten finish in the Open Championship since 1998. Fowler almost always plays well on links courses and I give him a good chance to contend this week and we get him at plus money in this matchup.

Ian Poulter -139 vs. Phil Mickelson

Poulter is known as a good scrambler and he does really well on links courses. He finished second at Royal Birkdale in 2008 and third at Muirfield in 2013. Mickelson is making a lot of mistakes right now and although he has played well in Scotland in the past, I just can’t see him turning things around this week. I will lay the price and take Poulter in this matchup.

Peter Uihlein -155 vs. Paul Dunne

It is easy to make a case for Uihlein this week, as he is playing really well on the PGA Tour this season. He has played well on links courses in the past and I expect him to be in the mix again this week. I will lay the price and take Uihlein in this matchup.

Luke List -113 vs. Soren Kjeldsen

I am taking a flyer on List this week in this matchup. List has not played links golf in the UK as a pro, but he did play in the 2006 Palmer Cup. He has thrived on windy courses in the U.S. and I think he will do well this week. I will lay the small price and take List in this matchup.
