Open de Espana Preview, Odds and Predictions

The European Tour gets back into action after nearly a month off and it is Jon Rahm favored in this week’s Open de Espana. A total of 25 Spaniards will play their home tournament with Rahm and Rafa Cabrera Bello the top two betting choices. Rahm is listed as the first choice in the betting at +400, while Cabrera Bello is the second choice at +1400. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the Open de Espana.

Odds Analysis

Jon Rahm +400

Rahm is overvalued this week. There is simply no doubt about it, as he shouldn’t be listed this low, but the field is weak and there are no other top players in the event. He could win, but he has to get over the disappointment of the Masters and the jet lag. I will pass on taking him at these odds.

Rafa Cabrera Bello +1400

I am not sure what to make of Cabrera Bello, as he has played poorly on this course in the past, but all of those events were many years ago. He also has to deal with the jet lag after the Masters. I am probably going to pass on him at these odds.

Pablo Larrazabal +2000

I think there could be some value in Larrazabal at odds of +2000. His last four starts are a third, a 44th and two fourth place finishes. He last played this event in 2009 and we know he will get a lot of support from the home fans.

Paul Dunne +2000

Dunne has played pretty well of late on the PGA Tour with a couple of top 10 finishes. He played well in Spain a couple of years ago with a tie for 16th in this event at Valderrama. I think he has a shot to win and we get him at +2000.

George Coetzee +2200

I know that Coetzee won last time out in the Tshwane Open but he never plays well in Spain and I can’t take him no matter how high his odds. He has missed 13 cuts in 16 tries in Spain.

Andrew Johnston +2500

Beef is the defending champion but the event was played on a different course two years ago. He has played well in Spain in the past, so it is not out of the question that he could contend this week.

Jorge Campillo +3800

My live longshot this week is Campillo who will be a local favorite. He played the Madrid Masters in 2009 on this course and finished in the top 10. I think he could be in the mix for the win this week and we get him at nice odds.

Course: The Centro Nacional de Golf is the host course for this event. It is a relatively easy course so the scores should be excellent this week. The last time an event on the European Tour was played on this course was in 2009 at the Madrid Masters and the winning score was 25-under par. The winning score in this event on this course in 2007 was -16 under par. Greens in regulation and putting are the two key statistics to consider this week.
