Omega European Masters Golf Matchups

The European Tour heads to one of the most picturesque tracks in the rotation this week with the field gathering along the Swiss Alps for the playing of the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club. We missed out on the breathtaking views last season when the tournament was canceled, but like a number of events it’s back on the slate. The first and so far only Tour victory for Sebastian Soderberg was here in 2019 when he toppled four other golfers in a playoff. In fact six of the last seven playings have gone to extra holes. Bernd Wiesberger opened as the betting favorite and is featured prominently in tournament matchups with odds for those head-to-heads listed below. Need to Know

The beauty of Crans-sur-Sierre will keep players in a blissful mood all week, but ultimately they are here to win. The track measures 6,848 yards so it isn’t long. And playing at altitude shrinks it even more. That makes distance off the tee less attractive and it also evens out the playing field. Look for players with a strong approach game as eight of the past 13 winners placed either first or second in GIR. Course experience is more important than course form considering Crans-sur-Sierre doesn’t resemble most tracks on tour. Adjustments for yardage and altitude are needed at every hole, and the greens are smaller than usual.

Omega European Masters Matchup Picks

Jacques Kruyswijk -110 vs. James Morrison

I’m betting on the South African finally breaking through at Crans. Kruyswijk missed the cut in his two previous appearances, but he’s a more experienced player now and is on a run of nice form with three straight finishes inside the top-11. His best showing in that stretch was last week when he placed T7 in the Czech Masters. Earlier in the year he had a pair of top-5s along with a T7 during a three-tournament run and he has the goods to be successful here.

Martin Kaymer +108 vs. Dean Burmester

My only plus odds matchup pick just so happens to be a two-time major winner and former world No. 1. Granted it was a decade ago, but Kaymer has occasionally shown signs of getting back to past form. He will probably never get back to where he was at the height of his career, but every now and then he pops up at the top of the leaderboard to keep me interested. He’s been out of action for several weeks so he should be well rested. And he captured a podium finish in the Austrian Open earlier this year after a two-month hiatus. I’m just sayin.

Richard Bland -115 vs. Justin Harding

Given his head start on most players in the field Bland does have more experience at Crans. Outside of a T5 in 2016, the results haven’t been great, but he has played the weekend in four of his last five visits. And recent form suggests Bland could be in for a big week. He was T3 in the Cazoo Classic last time out and hasn’t slowed down since his win in the British Masters. Including that tournament he has four top-5s in his last seven starts.

Bernd Wiesberger -125 vs. Sam Horsfield

Wiesberger has been good to me in my matchup picks over the last few years and it’s hard to fade him now. It’s not always a sure thing betting the favorite and the value decreases the higher up the odds board you go. I had to find the best possible matchup in terms of price and this is it. Wiesberger was the betting favorite a few weeks ago finishing T21 in the Cazoo Classic. Back on Tour after a MC at the U.S. Open, Wiesberger is 4 for 4 with three finishes inside the top 30.

Richie Ramsay -125 vs. Sean Crocker

I’m backing Ramsay for the outright so I might as well toss a few shekels on him in a matchup. The Scot has played this tournament a lot with some success. He won it all in 2012 starting a run of three top-10s in four appearances. He also enters on a run of strong form with no worse than a T28 in his last five starts, including a T4 in the Irish Open and T9 in the Cazoo Classic last time out.
