Made in HimmerLand Golf Matchups

The European Tour is back in action this week for the Made in HimmerLand. Formerly known as Made in Denmark, the tournament has a new name but the field will tackle the same course. Following a one off at a different venue the Tour returned to its roots at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort, where it was held for four years before moving for the 2018 playing. A COVID casualty last year, the tournament is back on the slate with Bernd Wiesberger set to defend his 2019 crown. The Austrian is the second favorite on the outright odds board behind Robert MacIntyre with odds suggesting a wide open field. And that allows for money to be made in tournament matchups. Need to Know

Players can smack the ball all over the Himmerland layout, but if the flat stick isn’t working they’re probably not making it to the weekend. Himmerland has a links feel to it being exposed with undulating greens. Playing at less than 7,000 yards, the track isn’t long, but it does require every skill to enjoy success. There are four par-3s with the 16th being the signature hole. Known as Himmerland Hill, the steep banks surrounding the green allow spectators to get an up close view of the proceedings. In 2015 the 16th was the shortest par-3 in ET history when it played just 79 yards. It’s a manageable hole in a stretch of three where players have a chance to improve their scores.

Made in HimmerLand Matchup Picks

Joachim B. Hansen +116 vs. Thomas Detry

Hansen had a good run on the resort courses in the Canary Islands with a seventh in the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open and T22 in the Tenerife Open. He closed the British Masters on a high note with a 69 and is looking forward to better things in his home country. Hansen hasn’t done well here in the past but he’s playing well ahead of a visit that has special meaning to him. And I’m counting on that topping everything else.

Eddie Pepperell +119 vs. Andrew Johnston

Oddsmakers aren’t convinced Pepperell has overcome the issues that led to his tumble down the world rankings. He has shown promise in his last two starts and I’ll take the plus money in this matchup. Pepperell was outstanding with his irons in the British Masters leading to a T11, and he performed well on the resort courses in the Canary Islands closing with a T12 at Tenerife. He bagged a fourth place here and has a pair of wins on courses where wind was a factor making him a threat.

Bernd Wiesberger -117 vs. Matthias Schwab

The results haven’t been there for Wiesberger, but playing with the best of the best on the PGA Tour can sometimes do that. Spending more time across the Atlantic probably helped him as he prepares to defend his title from 2019 when he won three times on the Euro circuit, and the course has been good to him. Wiesberger has the accuracy and approach and he got a head start on his travels after missing the cut last week. That should be enough to motivate him.

Thorbjorn Olesen +111 vs. Callum Hill

We haven’t seen a lot of Olesen this year with only three tournaments under his belt, but he’s making strides to put his off-course problems behind him. Two of those starts were on similar short, resort-style courses with a T5 at Meloneras and a T12 at Golf Costa Adeje. The HimmerLand layout is similar in length and yields plenty of birdies, which should help Olesen as he returns to his native Denmark.

Joost Luiten -111 vs. Ryan Fox

A withdrawal at the Tenerife Open interrupted a run of three straight top-12 showings and we haven’t seen Luiten since. He picked a good time to return to action on a course that appears to fit his game. Luiten ranks in the top-10 on the Tour in GIR and bogeys per round giving himself plenty of scoring chances. And HimmerLand is a scorers dream.
