Italian Open Golf Matchups

A regular part of the rotation since the European Tour’s inception in 1972, the Italian Open heads to the outskirts of Rome and the Marco Simone Golf Club for the first time since 1994. The tournament, as well as the host venue, has undergone major changes recently. Dropped from the prestigious Rolex Series a few years back, the Italian Open has seen a drop in the talent level. Still, a solid field will attack a course that had a full makeover in preparation for hosting the 2023 Ryder Cup. Matthew Fitzpatrick opened as the betting favorite and is laying big odds in a number of matchups. Playing a course new to most in the field should make for some interesting head to head encounters. Need to Know

During its nomadic existence a number of different venues hosted the Italian Open. Marco Simone is like a new course since a lot has changed since the tournament last played here. After being awarded the Ryder Cup a few years ago course handlers began to upgrade the lot. Work began in late 2018 and was completed earlier this year. So we get a sneak peak of the 2023 Ryder Cup host that stretches to 7,268 yards at par 71. There are a number of risk/reward holes and the course incorporates the natural rolling terrain of the region. It’s fairly wide open, but with water hazards located throughout there is a premium on accuracy. While it should be a tough test since the field has never played the redesigned course, it doesn’t appear to be intimidating.

Italian Open Matchup Picks

Bernd Wiesberger +121 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

Backing Wiesberger could have a nice payout if he overcomes the debacle of last week. The Austrian was this close to another victory until a gaffe on the 72nd hole cost him the trophy. That could be motivation to finish the deal or it could have a lasting negative impact. What makes a great player is how he overcomes adversity. Wiesberger has eight Tour wins so apparently has done that well. I’ve had success backing Wiesberger in the past and at his price it’s hard not to back him again.

Francesco Molinari -115 vs. Martin Kaymer

I wavered a bit on this matchup before finally settling on Molinari. The Italian seems to rise to the occasion when playing his national open. He’s the only Italian to win this tournament since 1981 – and he’s done it twice. He also has five other top-10s and his game appears to be rounding into form. He recently claimed a T13 in the U.S. Open and a second-round 64 last week in Switzerland are encouraging signs.

Garrick Higgo +125 vs. Matt Wallace

I kind of get the feeling Higgo is being undervalued in this tournament and this matchup. A trip to the PGA Tour didn’t go well after winning the Palmetto Championship in just his second PGA start. That was also his third win in a three-month stretch. He’s gotten a reality check since, but he hasn’t become a bad golfer. Getting back on the Euro Tour with a favorable field should spark his game, and at his price there’s a nice payday should he accomplish that.

Henrik Stenson +125 vs. Thomas Detry

We’ve seen a resurgence from Stenson and with a shot at a Ryder Cup spot still in play he needs another big week. It had been nearly two years since Stenson last had a top-10 on Tour until he broke out with a T4 in the Czech Masters. One week later he closed with a 63 to finish third in the European Masters. Not bad for a guy who had been written off. Apparently oddsmakers don’t think his run of form can last given his price in this matchup, but you never give up on a former major champion with 11 career victories.

Guido Migliozzi -105 vs. Tommy Fleetwood

He doesn’t have a win this season, but Migliozzi has come as close as you can on three different occasions. He was T2 in the Qatar Masters back in March and had back-to-back runner-up showings in May followed by a T4 in the U.S. Open in June. In action for the first time since the Olympics, Migliozzi snared a top-10 in the European Masters and you know he’s amped for his national open.
