European Tour Picks – Odds to Win Hero Indian Open

European Tour Picks

It’s one last chance for players to claim victory before the European Tour goes on hiatus until the end of April. The second of two back-to-back tournaments in Asia has the European Tour travelling to New Delhi for the Hero Indian Open, contested on the Gary Player course at the DLF Golf and Country Club. Once again the field is weakened by a lack of top-ranked golfers while defending champion Matt Wallace decided to peg it up at the WGC match play event in Texas. Spaniard Jorge Campillo is the betting favorite at BookMaker.eu with odds of +1200 to secure his first Tour tile, but the odds suggest the field is wide open. Some of the best Indian golfers will participate with Anirban Lahiri the second favorite at +1400 while Jazz Janewattananond ( +1600 ) and Shubhankar Sharma ( +2200 ) are a little further down the board.

Odds Analysis

Anirban Lahiri +1400

It’s rare when India hosts a Tour event and doesn’t have one of its own players fighting for contention on Sunday. Lahiri is among the favorites to win the event, but his odds are long enough that he’s worth the risk. And it really isn’t a risk for a guy who’s a regular at home with a magnificent record when performing. Lahiri has four wins and 12 total top-10s in 25 starts at the Asian Tour level. He was T30 at the Valspar Championship last week, but he does have a T5 and T34 on this course, so he knows what coming around the corner.

Maximilian Kieffer +2500

Driving the ball straight and staying out of trouble are priorities on the to-do list to tame DLF. Kieffer could do that better than most in the field, and that alone will get him to the weekend. He’s experiencing a stretch of fabulous form that saw him grab a share of runner-up honors at the Oman Open, T14 at the Qatar Masters and a T5 last week in Malaysia. The German tied for 15th here in 2016 and won in India while competing on the Challenge Tour. He’s been good in India and we’ll chalk up last year’s MC here to one bad outing.

Paul Peterson +5500

This is the kind of field that brings out the best in unheard of golfers. Peterson could be the guy this week. He’s been 55th and 23rd here in the past and he’s yet to miss a cut in India. And his recent play has been solid if not spectacular with a 13th in Kenya and 30th last week. Peterson ranked 12th in fairways hit and eighth in greens last season, and his recent finishes have been sparked by much of the same. That’s what it’ll take to tame DLF and Peterson seems to have a lot going for him right now.

Jorge Campillo +1200

There was a slide last week from his previous two finishes, but Campillo is still flashing good form with hopes of grabbing that first career victory. He finished T2 in both Oman and Qatar before grabbing a T20 last week in Malaysia. His MC last year didn’t scare him away and the Spaniard is leaning on good form in India to get him over the hump. He has a T2 on DLS’s Palmer course, which isn’t much different in layout and design, and he hasa top-10 in this event at the Delhi Golf Club. He is the favorite, but the odds are tempting.

Course: DLF Golf & Country Club – 7,379 yards, Par 72

Those who competed last week will have a shock when they tee it up at Player Course at DLF. With hazards, narrow fairways and doglegs, defending champ Matt Wallace summed it up by saying, “every hole is a double-bogey waiting to happen.” This layout is hosting for a third straight year and we haven’t seen a lot of mastery. Wallace and Andrew Johnston reached a playoff last year at -11 while S.S.P Chawrasia won by seven shots with a -10 two years ago. The undulating layout and narrow fairways demand precision off the tee, and on every other swing for that matter. The course is seemingly built to hurt every shot that doesn’t stay on track. It’s going to be hot and humid, so players better prepare accordingly.
