European Tour Picks – Hero Indian Open Matchup Odds

European Tour Picks

Now in its fifth year as a European Tour co-sanctioned event, the Hero Indian Open will play for a third straight time on the Gary Player course at the DLF Golf and Country Club just outside New Delhi. This is the second of back-to-back tournaments in Asia and the last before the Tour takes about a month long break. The field is watered down as many of the higher-ranked players avoid this stop with two PGA events taking place simultaneously. Defending champion Matt Wallace is in Texas for the WGC match play event leaving Spaniard Jorge Campillo as the betting favorite. Homegrown talent is plentiful with Anirban Lahiri, Jazz Janewattananond and Shubhankar Sharma all ready to peg it up. Below is a list of matchup odds for this week’s event.

Need To Know

Looking at what some of the pros said about the 7,379-yard, par-72 Player Course at DLF Golf and Country Club, it’s not surprising a good number of players skipped this event. In 2017, Eddie Pepperell said the course was “designed by Satan.” Defending champ Matt Wallace chimed in by saying, “every hole is a double-bogey waiting to happen.” With its doglegs, narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers and water hazards surrounding more than half the holes, the layout is a true test of patience. To have a chance on Sunday it’s imperative players avoid trouble. Precision off the tee, and on every other shot, is required since the course is seemingly built to cripple every shot that doesn’t stay on line since only 15 players finished below par last year.

Hero Indian Open Matchup Picks

Maximilian Kieffer -125 vs. Shubhankar Sharma

If anyone can master this layout it might be Kieffer. His precision stroke and level-headed temperament will serve him well on a course that’s designed to rack up the swings and frustrate players. The German hits the ball straight and he stays out of trouble, which should at least get him to the weekend. And he’s on a run of nice form so the confidence level is high. He was T2 at the Oman Open, T14 at the Qatar Masters, and T5 last week in Malaysia. Kieffer tied for 15th here in 2016 and won in India on the Challenge Tour. He missed the cut last year, but the positives outweigh that.

S.S.P. Chawrasia -110 vs. Bernd Wiesberger

The player with the most success since the event became co-sanctioned by the Euro Tour is easily Chawrasia, who has two wins and a runner-up in the last four playings. His second of back-to-back titles came at DLF in 2017 when he tamed the course to the tune of -10 and won by seven swings. Shiv missed the cut last year, but that’s not going to scare me away from picking him in this matchup. He loves the mother land, too. In 10 Euro Tour starts in his home country he has four wins and a runner-up. Wiesberger hasn’t found his form after a long injury absence, and this layout is going to help.

Anirban Lahiri -120 vs. Jorge Campillo

These two are at the top of the odds board to win the title, so why not have them duke it out in a matchup. We usually see and Indian golfer among the leaders when events are hosted in their country, and Lahiri has been the one on many occasions. He’s a regular at home with a solid record. Lahiri has four wins and 12 total top-10s in 25 starts at the Asian Tour level, and he’s quite familiar with the DLF layout having secured a T5 and T34 in two starts. His Sunday 68 at the Valspar was the low round of the day and a warm up for this week’s challenge.
