Need to Know
This tournament is a true test for the links golfers with the first three days contested on three different courses. Sunday’s final round is back at St. Andrews. All three tracks are similar in yardage with each playing at par 72. And don’t forget this is a pro-am event, so the mood will be lightened considerably. You can also expect some easier pin placements so the ams don’t get frustrated. Since last year’s playing there has been yardage tacked onto St. Andrews and Carnoustie, but it’s nothing major. All three courses measure out to less than 7,400 yards. The challenge will more than likely come from the weather with wind always a factor. In the event of high winds green speeds need to be slower.

Bernd Wiesberger +115 vs. Danny Willett
I’ve done quite well backing Wiesberger the last few months and I’ll keep going back to that well until it dries up. He got me a matchup win last week at the BMW and he goes head-to-head with the winner this time. Wiesberger has been as consistent as anyone the last two months and he grabbed another top-20 last week. Willett was unconscious taking the title by four-shots and I expect he’ll be savoring that win for a while.
Tony Finau +137 vs. Tommy Fleetwood
It wasn’t that long ago everyone was talking up Finau and how the time is now for him to post a victory. Well, that hasn’t happened as the game cooled off. Finau had a strong start last week playing the first 36 holes at -6, which had him within striking distance of the lead. However, 77-74 over the last two rounds dropped him to T51. That was still better than Fleetwood, who didn’t go below 70 in any round and finished T60.
Tyrrell Hatton -121 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick
No one has dominated this tournament and these courses like Hatton over the last three years. He went back-to-back in 2016 and 2017 shooting a combined 47-under, and he took runner-up last year. That one is a bit deceiving though. On his way to a third straight win Hatton had the lead at the turn on Sunday only to cough it up. Will that meltdown linger or will Hatton once again destroy the field? He missed the cut last week after a long layoff, but he should be in fine form on the links, where he absolutely thrives.
Rory McIlroy -133 vs. Jon Rahm
You really can’t go wrong with McIlroy in your pocket. The best golfer on the PGA Tour last season, as voted by the players, has continued his run of excellence on the Euro circuit. And he publicly stated his desire to win this event after three runner-up showings. A first round 76 had Rory on the verge of missing the cut last week. As the good ones do, he responded with three sub-70s and was only one shot behind the winner over the last 54 holes.
Robert MacIntyre +109 vs. Haotong Li
He might still be green since he’s fairly new to the Tour, but MacIntyre is eager to make his debut in this event on home soil. He’s been solid over the last few events with a T23 at the Czech Masters and a T2 at the European Open. A T28 last week got him prepped for this and if the stage isn’t too big I like his chances.
