Sky Sports British Masters Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Justin Rose is the host of this tournament and historically the host has not done well in this event. Ian Poulter hosted the event three years ago, Luke Donald hosted two years ago and last year it was Lee Westwood. None of the three players were in contention in those three years, as Poulter tied for 33rd, Donald missed the cut and Westwood tied for 15th. This year the tournament will be played on the Old Course at Walton Heath. Rose loves this course so you would expect him to play well, but history is against him.
Francesco Molinari +115 vs. Justin Rose
I don’t go against Rose that often in matchups, but I think this is a good spot. Molinari has simply been the better player this year and I can’t ignore the trends against the host in this event. Molinari was great at the Ryder Cup and he has played well in England in the past with a win this year in the BMW PGA Championship. I will take Molinari at plus money in this matchup.
Chris Wood +105 vs. Shane Lowry
Wood didn’t play well in Scotland last week, but he won at Wentworth in 2016 and he has played well in this event with finishes of 9th, 22nd and 26th. He has finished second three times this year on the European Tour. Lowry missed the cut in Scotland last week, but he has also played well in England in the past. I will take Wood at plus money in this matchup.
Haotong Li -115 vs. Andy Sullivan
I like how Li comes into this event, as he had a top five finish last week in Scotland. He played well for the first three rounds in this event last year. He also did well in U.S. Open qualifying at Walton Heath last year. Sullivan has not had any competitive play at Walton Heath and I think that is the difference in this matchup.
Lee Westwood -115 vs. Ross Fisher
Westwood played pretty well last year in this event and he has played well recently on home turf with a tie for 27th or better in his last seven starts. He also has decent current form with a second and a tie for 12th. Fisher has failed to play well on this course in the past, so I will take Westwood in this matchup.
