BMW PGA Championship Preview, Odds and Predictions

2018 BMW PGA Championship Odds preview Picks

Rory McIlroy is a solid favorite to win the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour this week. He gets a bit of a break because both Jon Rahm and Justin Rose decided to bypass this event and play in the Fort Worth Invitational on the PGA Tour instead. McIlroy is the top betting choice at odds of +750, while Alex Noren is the second choice at odds of +1350. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the BMW PGA Championship.

Odds Analysis

Rory McIlroy +750

If Rory plays well he will win this event, as his best is better than anyone else’s best in this field. He might even be able to win with less than his best but the problem with backing Rory is that he doesn’t win as often as you might think. He also struggles on this course, especially in the first two rounds. He did play well in the first two rounds in 2014 and won this tournament, but too often he gets too far behind at Wentworth. I think he is overvalued at these odds.

Alex Noren +1400

Noren was great last year in this event with a final round 62. He has played more on the PGA Tour this year than on the European Tour and he played well, with seven finishes of Top 21 or better in ten starts. I think he has some value at these odds.

Paul Casey +1400

Casey is kind of like McIlroy in some respects, as he has a marquee reputation but he simply doesn’t win that often. He also doesn’t play that well at Wentworth. I’ll pass.

Tommy Fleetwood +1400

I think Fleetwood should be listed as the second choice in the betting behind McIlroy. You can even make a case that Fleetwood should be favored, as he has won more often recently than has McIlroy.

Branden Grace +1600

Grace was in contention last year in this event and he has four top 25 finishes in five visits. Grace played well on the PGA Tour last week with a tie for 3rd and I expect him to be in contention this week.

Francesco Molinari +1800

The West Course is really suited for a player like Molinari and he has seven top 30 finishes in this event. Molinari has not been in great form this season, but he could turn things around on this course.

Shane Lowry +2500

You have to give Lowry a chance this week, as he has four top six finishes in this event. He has not played on the European Tour since finishing in a tie for 2nd in the DP World Tour Championship.

Byeong-Hun An +3300

An has played well this season overall, but this is only his third start on the European Tour this season. He won this event in 2015 and I think he is a live longshot this week.

Course: Wentworth Club was redesigned before last year’s event and players gave the thumbs up to the improvements. Four of the greens were entirely rebuilt and four five others were partially rebuilt. Alex Noren won this event a year ago by shooting 11-under par. Nine of the last ten winners of this event ranked 7th or better in All-Around, so this course is a fair test.
