BMW PGA Championship Matchups Spreads

Rory McIlroy leads the field for the BMW PGA Championship this week on the European Tour. Rory is the only golfer listed at single-digit odds to win the event and he is favored in all of his matchups. We’ll look to get back on track after struggling with the different format of last week’s event in Belgium. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s BMW PGA Championship.

BMW PGA Championship Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. There is no specific recipe for winning at Wentworth, as a good all-around game is needed. Nine of the last ten winners of this event ranked 7th or better in All-Around. Different types of players have won this event in the past, as the last four winners have been McIlroy, An, Wood and Noren.

Tommy Fleetwood +140 vs. Rory McIlroy

This is a price play, as I don’t think Rory should be a big favorite over Fleetwood. Rory is definitely capable of blitzing any field, but more often than not he doesn’t play up to his ability. Fleetwood has played a lot on the PGA Tour this season and didn’t look out of place at all. I will take the plus odds on Fleetwood in this matchup.

Shane Lowry -105 vs. Ian Poulter

I like the chances of Lowry contending this week, as he has finished in the top six four times in this event. He has finished 12th or better in five of his last seven in this tournament. I know Poulter is playing better, but Lowry has the better overall game. I will take Lowry in this matchup.

Byeong Hun An -115 vs. Tyrrell Hatton

An won this event in 2015 and he is capable of contending again. Hatton has a lot of talent but far too often his emotions get the better of him. I think An is the more reliable player and I like him in this matchup.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello -165 vs. Alexander Levy
Cabrera-Bello has had top 25 finishes in four of his last seven appearances in this event. Levy has had a good season but I still think Cabrera-Bello is the better player and he should finish higher than Levy this week.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat vs. Andrew Johnston

This would be a fun matchup to watch if these two were paired together, as they are both big men. Aphibarnrat is playing better than “Beef” right now and Aphibarnrat has finished in the top 20 in two of his last three appearances in this event. I will take Aphibarnrat in this matchup.
