Alfred Dunhill Championship Golf Matchups

The European Tour is the only game in town this week, so research the field to take advantage of the betting opportunities that are available for the Alfred Dunhill Championship. The middle event in a three-tournament swing through South Africa has the field at the picturesque Leopard Creek Country Club in Malelane. And as the name suggests a hazard on the layout is the wildlife that makes the area home. The field looks much stronger than last week’s Joburg Open and is again littered with a heavy dose of local talent. South Africans Christiaan Bezuidehout and Brandon Stone have emerged as the betting favorites and both are featured in several tournament matchups. Need to Know

Let’s don’t get this event confused with the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which is a more lucrative Euro circuit tournament that takes place in Scotland. Also, the renovations Leopard Creek Country Club underwent a few years have drastically decreased scores. Pablo Larrazabal’s 8-under last year was the lowest winning score since the event moved to Leopard Creek. The length remains the same at 7,249 yards and par 72 that requires top-notch ball striking, and the distance plays well for big hitters. The course sits on the edge of Kruger National Park with the Crocodile River winding through several holes. It won’t be a surprise to see wildlife that make the surrounding area home make an appearance. Three par 5s on the last six holes are scoreable, giving golfers a chance to make up ground late.

Alfred Dunhill Championship Matchup Picks

Joachim B. Hansen -118 vs. Matthew Jordan

It’s always a risk backing the winner from the previous week, but that win was a long time coming for Hansen and I doubt it’s going to affect his game too much. And besides, he’s got some demons to exorcise at Leopard Creek and a strong showing in South Africa only boosts his confidence. He enters in fine form after a T7 at the BMW Championship last month. There was some concern when he was forced to withdraw from Italian Open. He put all the doubters to rest with his 2-shot win last week.

Johannes Veerman -127 vs. Marcus Armitage

Veerman is probably ticked after last week’s showing when he faded to T35 following an opening 64. If he’s peeved over that he’s definitely stewing about what happened in Cyprus when he recorded the lowest 72-hole score only to finish T4. The unusual scoring format at the Cyprus Showdown did not work in his favor. The Texan has three top-10s in his last seven starts and one of his five top-10s this season came right here last November with a T7, so the course is to his liking. The odds are a little long, but I’ll back a hot golfer.

Wilco Nienaber +102 vs. Shaun Norris

Nienaber wowed everyone last week with his tremendous drives that would make Bryson DeChambeau cringe. The other parts of his game were working, too, leading to a solo second. The fairways are a little tighter at Leopard Creek than they are at Randpark, which could play a role in the young South African’s game. However, a T24 at this event last year is proof that he can handle whatever comes his way.

Adri Arnaus -110 vs. Gavin Green

Recovering from the coronavirus was a positive step for Arnaus. Now he’s trying to get his game back in order. I’ll give him a pass for missing the cut last week, his first start since being cleared to play. I’m sure he was sapped of some strength and energy. With that out of the way I can see the Spaniard returning to the form that got him a T5 at the Italian Open before the diagnosis. He was consistent before the bug hit going 4 for 4 with three top-30s, including the T5 in Italy. His last visit to Leopard Creek resulted in a top-10 in 2018.

Zander Lombard -126 vs. Sean Crocker

Recent course renovations have apparently done their job with scores plummeting. One player who seems to enjoy the new look is Lombard, who has a pair of top-10s since the remodel. In 2018 Lomabard was within one-shot of the lead in the final round only to fade to third. Needing an eagle on the 72nd hole to force a playoff last year, Lombard instead carded an eight and finished T7. He enters off a T15 at the Joburg Open that included a Friday 65,
