The results this preseason have not been positive for either side, so it’s a good thing the games don’t count. But the struggles have to be alarming nonetheless. The Atlanta Falcons have played without Devonta Freeman and Julio Jones, so their poor offensive numbers aren’t a complete surprise. The regular season can’t get started soon enough for the Cleveland Browns, who are looking to put that winless last season behind them as quickly as possible. Unfortunately they’ll have to play through one more preseason matchup before the games count for real. Things appear to be looking better for the Browns, though. In a game that traditionally features players further down the depth chart or not even on it, the Week 4 preseason matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals could be even worse. With the teams scheduled to kick off the regular season against each other, this has to be one of the strangest scheduling snafus in the history of scheduling. Both coaches will likely play ultra-conservative football and not give anything away, so we can expect a boring finale.... 

This will be the last chance we get to see Jameis Winston before his suspension kicks in for the regular season opener, and there’s a good chance the former No. 1 overall pick takes the field for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who go for the Florida Sweep when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Week 4 preseason finale. The Bucs lost for the first time this preseason when they gift wrapped a win for Detroit last week. But their win over Miami in the exhibition opener set them up to claim braggi... 

New Arizona Cardinals coach Steve Wilks is going to find out just how difficult the NFL really is. Wilks and his team have made it look easy so for, winning both exhibition games, but he heads into the preseason Week 3 dress rehearsal with two gimpy quarterbacks. The rookie coach sounded like he’s been at it for decades earlier this week when he wouldn’t reveal any information on who would start and how long they would play against the Dallas Cowboys. Maybe he doesn’t know.... 

Jalen Ramsey didn’t hold back in a recent interview when talking about quarterbacks around the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back was particularly harsh when talking about Matt Ryan, who he called “overrated” and a product of former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s system. Ryan, the league’s MVP in 2016, has nothing to prove to the third-year player, but the comments certainly add some intrigue to this preseason Week 3 matchup when the Atlanta Falcons head to Florida.... 

There are plenty of storylines surrounding the preseason Week 3 matchup between the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles Chargers, and that’s probably why it will be the first national telecast for CBS. Both clubs are coming off strong seasons and are in position to contend for a title in their respective conference. Then, of course, there’s that whole quarterback thing. Drew Brees and Philip Rivers were teammates on the Chargers when the club decided to stick with Rivers and let Brees walk as... 

I’m sure Josh Allen didn’t want to get the first start of his pro career because of an injury to a teammate, but that’s how things lined up for him this week and he’ll attempt to seize the opportunity to become the Buffalo Bills regular season starter against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 of the preseason. The three-player race for the No. 1 job was cut to two after A.J. McCarron sustained a shoulder injury last week, opening the door for the seventh overall pick to walk through it.... 

A battle of unbeatens takes place in Week 3 of the NFL preseason when the New England Patriots visit the Carolina Panthers. Eight teams have yet to lose and this is the only matchup that features two of them. Tom Brady saw extended action last week and the Pats felt better after knocking off Philly in their Super Bowl rematch, and Brady shook the hand of Nick Foles afterwards. We never know what Bill Belichick is going to do in the preseason and there’s a chance Brady doesn’t play on Friday.... 

We are just halfway through the preseason, but some of the issues that plagued the Detroit Lions last season continue to be a problem. The Lions couldn’t protect Matthew Stafford and failed to generate much of a pass rush in a loss to the Giants last week, preventing Matt Patricia from getting his first win as Detroit’s coach. The good news is that the Lions still have time to figure things out and that starts against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3 of the preseason.... 

The Minnesota Vikings spent a lot of money to lure Kirk Cousins to the Twin Cities and they should get a good look at their star quarterback when he takes the field against the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason Week 3 dress rehearsal. The Vikes would like to get more of what they saw in the preseason opener and less of what they witnessed last week from their newest gazillionaire. Cousins was perfect in one series against Denver, but he struggled last week against the Jags’ defense, and the Vike... 

The San Francisco 49ers will get to see just how their investment in Jimmy Garoppolo will pay off. Sure, the guy hasn’t lost a game as a starting NFL quarterback and he led the Niners to five straight wins to end last season. But they were 1-10 when he took over and it’s much easier to play with no pressure. Jimmy G played sparingly in the first two preseason games, but he will get his most extended playing time against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3 of the preseason, in a setting that closely... 

Ben Roethlisberger has been around long enough that he probably doesn’t need to play during the preseason. But it’s always good to get reps in games that don’t count in the standings and Big Ben is likely to see his first action when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 of the preseason. Roethlisberger cleared the concussion protocol that had him in street clothes last week, but the Steelers are still without Le’Veon Bell, who continues his holdout.... 

Joe Flacco doesn’t have to worry about losing his starting job to rookie first-round pick Lamar Jackson. Flacco has been money this preseason while Jackson is still learning that the NFL is much different from the college game. The real position battle on the Baltimore Ravens roster is for the backup quarterback gig with the forgotten Robert Griffin III making the decision more difficult for John Harbaugh. The teacher and the pupil get together when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Chicago Bears in Week 3 of the preseason. The Bears plucked Matt Nagy off Andy Reid’s coaching staff to become their head man and transform an offense that was the most boring in the league under John Fox. Nagy put together a top-5 offense last season as Reid’s offensive coordinator and got his start in the NFL coaching ranks under Reid in 2011.... 

You don’t often see a team score 51 points, but the Green Bay Packers welcomed Aaron Rodgers back to Lambeau Field with a thrashing of the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. It had been nearly a year since Rodgers last stepped on the frozen tundra and it looked like he hadn’t missed a thing. Rodgers directed a touchdown drive on his only possession, hooking up with his new favorite target Jimmy Graham, and the avalanche of points was underway. We haven’t seen the 2018 Los Angeles Rams yet this preseason, but that’s about to change on Saturday. Not wanting to risk injury or give away any secrets, Sean McVay sat his presumed starters during the first two exhibition games. Opening the regular year with Raiders, McVay went with his reserves to beat Oakland last week. The Cleveland Browns have won all of one game in the past two seasons combined, including a winless mark in 2017. So obviously expectations are going to be pretty low again, but the oddsmakers do see a decent amount of improvement coming.... 

The Cincinnati Bengals won seven games a year ago and have a lot of the same players returning, so it shouldn’t be a huge shock that the oddsmakers have projected them to win the same amount in 2018. However, there are reasons for concern, as the underlying metrics could portend some struggles this tear. ... 

The Baltimore Ravens had a dominant defense in 2017 but didn’t get nearly enough help from the offense. The wide receiver corps has been revamped and if the Ravens can increase their efficiency with the ball in their hands, they could be in line to push for a playoff berth.... 

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the steadiest teams in the NFL, as the star trio of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le’Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown has kept them among the best teams in the AFC for the past half-decade.... 

If the Washington Redskins didn’t have bad luck they’d have no luck at all. For a team that dealt with an enormous amount of injuries last season, the Skins are at it again. And the running back position has been hit particularly hard this preseason. They lost second-round pick Derrius Guice to a season-ending injury in the opener and two more backs went down last week, forcing the team to reach out to Adrian Peterson. The Philadelphia Eagles got some good news on the injury front when it was determined Nick Foles had a minor shoulder sprain. The potential loss of Foles, combined with the uncertainly of Carson Wentz leaves the Eagles in no position to take any risks when they visit the Cleveland Browns in Week 3 of the preseason. In the grand scheme of things the game is meaningless. But once every preseason and when the teams don’t meet in the regular year, bragging rights are at stake. The New York Jets and New York Giants will fight their annual battle in Week 3 of the preseason in what is the shortest road trip of the year for the G-Men. Ending what was the longest current playoff drought in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills won nine games in 2017 and participated in their first postseason game since the 1999 season.
