Yellow Jackets vs. Golden Gophers - Quick Lane Bowl Props

Paul Johnson has had a great career. Johnson has been involved in coaching for 40 years, and he has been in charge of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for the last decade. Under his watch, the Yellow Jackets have become respectable once again, and his triple option offense ensured that the program was able to compete with the heavy hitters in the ACC year in and year out. He will coach his last game on Wednesday when his Yellow Jackets face the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Detroit.

Odds Analysis

It’s been a wild ride for Minnesota this season. The Golden Gophers nearly broke into the AP Top 25 thanks to a 3-0 start with a win over Fresno State, but a 42-13 loss to Maryland dashed those hopes and kicked off a four-game losing streak. They knocked off Indiana and thrashed Purdue in the second half of the season, but they needed to beat rival Wisconsin for the first time in 15 years to get to a bowl game. Minnesota was able to do just that, hammering Wisconsin 37-15 in Camp Randall, claiming Paul Bunyan’s Axe in the process.

Georgia Tech didn’t look like it would make a bowl game after a 3-4 start to the season. The Yellow Jackets knew they would be big underdogs against Georgia in their regular season finale, so they needed to step up in the second half of ACC play if they were going to get to six wins. Georgia Tech did even better than it needed to, winning four in a row at one point with big wins over Virginia Tech and Miami along the way. They gashed Virginia Tech’s run defense so badly that they put up 49 points without completing a single pass along the way.

Matchup to Watch

The triple option is a great system to run if its hard to recruit talent, and it is difficult to prepare for in a short amount of time. However, Minnesota has had a lot of time to get ready to stop this offense, the question is if they can actually do it.

That’s often a question of motivation this time of year. The Golden Gophers have one of the most motivational coaches in college football in PJ Fleck. Fleck is known for his charisma and crazy antics, and you can be sure he will have his team pumped up and ready to play.

Player to Watch

Tanner Morgan took over for Zack Annexstad after the latter went down with an injury earlier In the season, and he has been decent for a freshman. Morgan averaged over nine yards per pass, and he completed a higher percentage of his passes than Annexstad. However, he has been far more turnover prone, and he tossed six interceptions in 139 passes this season. He must be more careful with the ball in this one.

Live Betting Preview

Tyler Johnson proved that he was one of the best receivers in the Big Ten no matter who was throwing him the ball. He accounted for nearly 40 percent of Minnesota’s receptions and receiving yards, and he could have a big day against Georgia Tech’s defense. The Yellow Jackets are ranked outside the top 100 in total defense according to S&P+, and Minnesota should be able to move the ball. I think Minnesota has an excellent chance to pull off the upset here.
