Awards season is upon us. The first major awards for 2018 will come on January 6 when the Golden Globe Awards are held in Beverly Hills. The Golden Globes are an initial indicator as to which films, actors, actresses, and directors are in line to win Oscars, so everyone in Hollywood will be paying attention to this star-studded gala. The Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on NBC on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.

Best Picture - Drama

A Star is Born -600

If Beale Street Could Talk +500

Black Panther +1300

BlacKkKlansman +1500

Bohemian Rhapsody +2000

There’s a lot of hype for Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, and their picture A Star is Born. The film received rave reviews and it is a heavy favorite to win the most prestigious award at the Golden Globes, while Cooper and Lady Gaga are the favorites to win Best Actor and Best Actress for their performances in the movie too.

It’s going to be hard for any other contender to galvanize the support needed to knock off A Star is Born. However, it will be interesting to see how If Beale Street Could Talk performs. This was a low-budget film that wasn’t heavily publicized and most people have never heard of it. Critics loved the film though, and it was directed by the same person that directed Moonlight, Barry Jenkins. Moonlight won at the Golden Globes and the Oscars two years ago, and Jenkins might have another masterpiece on his hands.

Best Actress Motion Picture – Drama

Lady Gaga -500

Glenn Close +300

Nicole Kidman +2203

Melissa McCarthy +2203

Rosamund Pike +2203

No one is giving the three longshots much of a chance, and the vast majority of people could not tell you anything about the five movies involved here other than the favorite. The Golden Globes are typically full of surprises though, and I would wager that A Star Is Born will miss out on two of the awards with this being one of them. Hollywood is an insular place, and it usually takes some time for debutantes to win.

That’s why I’ll go with Close. She has been nominated for 13 Golden Globes during her career, but she has just two wins. Close gave a powerhouse performance in The Wife, and she has a good chance to pull off the upset here.

Best Actor Motion Picture – Drama

Bradley Cooper -425

Rami Malek +280

Willem Dafoe +1800

Lucas Hedges +2000

John David Washington +2000

This is the third time that Cooper has been nominated for a Golden Globe, and he has yet to win. They say that the third time is a charm though, so that should bode well for him here. Cooper has distanced himself from the comedy films that made him famous and he has now crossed the bridge and become a serious actor. Given enough time, a risk like that is typically rewarded, and I think he’ll get the win here.

Keep an eye on Rami Malek though. There were a lot of people that liked his take on Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, and he has already won numerous awards for Mr. Robot.

Best Director - Motion Picture

Alfonso Cuaron -400

Bradley Cooper +300

Adam McKay +1400

Spike Lee +1800

Peter Farrelly +2100

Finally, a category where A Star is Born isn’t favored. Like I said before, it’s tough for debutantes to win at the Golden Globes, although it is easier for Cooper given his past as an actor. That being said, Cuaron should win this award pretty easily.

His last five films have all been smash hits, and Cuaron won the Oscar for Best Director in 2013 for his last film, Gravity. It has received high praise from virtually every sector of the movie industry and is loved by critics too. Cuaron will receive an edge for another reason too. Roma is a Spanish language film that talks about like in Mexico City, and that should play well in Hollywood considering the political climate.
