League of Legends 2020 World Championship Group Stage Preview

League of Legends 2020 World Championship Group Stage Preview

The field for the 2020 League of Legends World Championship is set. LGD Gaming, Team Liquid, PSG Talon, and Unicorns of Love made it out of the Play-In Stage to be the last four teams in the main event, so now the biggest event in Esports is set to kick off in earnest. Over 100 million people from around the world tuned in to watch the League of Legends World Championship last year, and we could see even more watching the event live this time.

LOL 2020 World Championship Group Stage Betting Odds

Group A

G2 Esports -133

Suning +150

Team Liquid +600

Machi Esports +2900

The sportsbooks are still giving a lot of respect to G2 Esports. The Kings of Europe have won four straight regional titles, and they did win the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational and finish runner-up to FunPlus Phoenix at Worlds last year. However, G2 have not looked as strong as they were last year. Their struggles during the Spring Split and Summer Split are well-documented, so they are vulnerable.

It’s hard to have faith in Liquid pulling off the upset given how badly they were stomped by G2 at MSI last year, but Suning are a dangerous side. SofM has been arguably China’s best jungler and SwordArt is a very experienced support on this stage. Observers are somewhat down on China and the LPL after LGD’s poor performance in the Play-In Stage, but this is a great price to nab Suning.

Group B

DAMWON Gaming -137

JD Gaming +100

Rogue +2300

PSG Talon +2900

This is the Group of Death. DAMWON Gaming and JD Gaming are two of the three most talented teams at Worlds, so Rogue and PSG Talon were unlucky to be drawn here. Rogue would have been a dangerous team in another group, and PSG Talon have already turned a lot of heads after their performance in the Play-In Stage.

There is no question that DAMWON and JDG are far more talented than the other two teams though. DAMWON is my pick to win Worlds given the play of Nuguri and ShowMaker, and JDG have been one of China’s top two teams all year. The Korean champions are the pick here as an odds-on favorite per the League of Legends betting odds.

Group C

Gen. G -161

Fnatic +240

Team SoloMid +700

LGD Gaming +700

It’s hard to fully trust Gen. G after what we saw from them in the playoffs. They have a great mid laner in BDD and the best bottom laner in Korea in Ruler, but they are outgunned at the other three positions. Gen. G are only odds-on favorites here because of the perceived weakness of the other teams, but there is a ton of value in LGD.

Yes, LGD were very disappointing over the last week, but they are here. This team has now had time to figure themselves out on stage, and they are still very talented. Peanut can take over games out of the jungle, and both Langx and xiye are experienced veterans that can consistently win lane. This is a steal of a price and shouldn’t last long.

Group D

Top Esports -250

DragonX +200

Unicorns of Love +1400

FlyQuest +4900

Poor FlyQuest. The second seed from North America’s LCS is getting no respect, and they are massive underdogs to everyone else in this group. Even CIS representative Unicorns of Love have much shorter odds than FlyQuest, as the only truly elite player on this roster is PowerOfEvil.

Top Esports should run away with this group. They looked like the best team in the world after their victory at the Mid-Season Cup, and they backed it up by winning the LPL Summer Split title over JDG. As for DragonX, this team is very inconsistent, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see them end up not making it into the knockout rounds.s
